awesome! [Posted on 2007-01-09] not only was this very cheap compared to ones like it.. but it doenst look cheap at all. the remotes are very awesome (they have blue LED's and are just awesome). the doors unlock/lock gave me some trouble, but it was becuase i thought my locks were one thing, but were a differnt system.. otherwise its worth the money, i think it is alot better then the stock car alarms that come with cars. also the range on the wireless remotes is way more then 400FT .. i can hit the door unlocks and alarm button from way over 700 feet..
A mediocre alarm made by a mediocre alarm maker [Posted on 2007-12-15] When I first obtained this alarm, it immediately went off. There I was, middle of a parking lot, and this damn car alarm is going through the noise cycles. You know, in case you somehow missed the first loud "wheee oooohh whooo oohhhh" pattern, there's 5 other equally annoying patterns that follow. But the noise is just like every other car alarm out there, so nobody pays attention except to demonstrate a smug look of annoyance.
Anyone who actually does pay attention, besides, you know, the owner of the car, is easily dissuaded by my lying that I've "locked my keys in the car". Heck, I've had people see me picking a door who have then come over to help. Sometimes I wish I could drive away and say "hey guess what you've just been an accessory to!" but I don't say that, and they don't seem to ever notice that there really isn't a set of keys in the car.
In any case, as far as I'm concerned this alarm is fantastic. I mean, I wouldn't put it on my own car, but you all really should. For one, the transmitter uses a really simple RF pattern, even if it does do "switching". So I can fire up a little program on my palm pilot that goes through 20,000 RF and IR codes in about 10 minutes. In a full parking garage, it's really about 10 seconds before I hear one of the cars give a little "beep boop", signaling that it's ready to roll. More often than not, it's using one of these ASTRA alarms if the alarm isn't stock.
What I really like, though, are the extra features such as door unlocks, remote start, and the truck opener. No longer do I have to pick crappy car doors or break windows, because the doors unlock at the press of a button once I've figured out the code. This convenience is just too good to pass up for someone such as myself. I mean, you might have a really crappy car with this alarm installed, and I might have no intention of jacking your car, but at least now I can pop your trunk, open your doors remotely and throw your loot into the other, more valuable car that I'm driving home. It's really a win-win situation here, because I get your crap and I also get the satisfaction of knowing you'll come up to your fully locked car, with alarm re-activated, and have no idea how everything suddenly went missing. Thanks, ASTRA. You're a pal.
Then there are just the sheer comedy functions of this alarm. Remote engine kill? That's great for a day out with the family. You drive away and, suddenly, what's that? Your car just died. Oh and the alarm is going off with you inside it looking panicked and guilty. Hey is that the cops I see coming down the street? I know how you feel, bub. I wouldn't been in that situation many more times if not for the conveniences of your fancy alarm system.
Oh but I'll hit the remote starter just as the police are cautiously walking up to your car with the alarm blaring. That way it looks like you're about to make a run for it. Fun fun fun!
But I did give this thing 3 stars, if only because I'm able to scrap the used alarm kits for decent money. Then I can go steal the cars of my buyers, and the circle of life continues!
