Nice sound for the price [Posted on 2008-09-18] I'm no audiophile, so I was looking for a nice cheap set of speakers---for my big screen TV! I have these speakers hooked up to my JVC RP HDTV (there are audio jacks in the back of the TV). The set up is in the family room downstairs (around 300sf)where there are ceramic floors and a large area rug, plus several pieces of furniture (tables, sofa, chair, armoire, etc. Because there is no acoustical ceiling and/or wall-to-wall carpeting, I expected the speakers to sound somewhat echo-ey, and they do. But not irritatingly so. I'm pretty impressed with the sound I get and the placement (of the 2 speakers) is such that I get a surround-sound effect. It's just fine for me since I don't spend most of my life plopped in front of the TV. So I've settled for this "pseudo-home entertainment" setup, and for those who are like me who just want a bit more "oomph" from their TV (or computer for that matter), this inexpensive set will serve your needs. In fact, I'm thinking of getting another set of these to hook up to the upstairs TV as well. I'm giving them 3 stars so some of you won't be disappointed by thinking these are kick-a$$, plus I don't want to upset the "true" audiophiles. And one more thing--I have not noticed any kind of humming or other weird buzzing like some have mentioned in their reviews.
Highs and Lows but Sketchy Middles [Posted on 2008-10-13] Excellent product. The base is outstanding and the highs have little clipping even at the louder volumes. Does a great job handling everything from music to video games to movies. Only drawback is that the middle frequencies are a bit muffled but considering the price, name brand, and performance, it's a small trade-off for a fantastic product.
low frequences too much [Posted on 2008-11-25] I bought this set a long time ago and I am not happy with it.
Way too much bass!! even when I put bass low and treble almost max the sound is way to low in frequences.
another problem is if you shutdown the bass there is a noise background.
a cheap set but not great. I'll not advise you to buy it.
Problem with repair [Posted on 2008-12-07] I read through some of the reviews - the speakers do emit a hum. However, I was ok with it. But one day I tripped over wire plugged into the back of the woofer and the cable plug broke off in the receptor. I tried to scrap it out but could not. I found to my dismay that the woofer is built in such a way that it cannot be repaired. I brought it back to Best Buy to see if they could scrap out the remains of the cable plug in the receptor but they could not. The back of the woofer says that the unit can not be serviced. It should not be too hard to build a woofer so that it is relatively modular. I gave it a star since it is decent for its price, but I can't use it now.
disputable but good [Posted on 2009-01-02] At first I have to claim that I am not a native English speaker, so I may use some descriptive words unproperly, sorry for that.
You may feel strange why I gave a "disputable" stuff a five star. Well, I should explain this. I bought this item directly from altec lansing by $33.00 and free shipping. (Hope the website manager would not delete my post since I just want somewhere to post my review to this item, so that more people can buy it based on other people's experience.) That is incredible price for this speaker I think. This speaker may have some defeats in design. As you may have read them from other reviewers, the most trouble one is definitely, for a customer like me, the boring low frequency noise. There are two possibilities for it to produce such noise. 1, to turn it on and keep it on high volume, and play no music. 2, to turn the bass to lowest volume. I have no idea if this has anything to do with integrated sound card on my computer. (Please be careful, in some cases, not necessarily my case, the low frequency noise is made by the low-quality sound card). But I have to keep the bass in a very low level in most of the time so that I would not experience a heart attack by simply playing some pop music. Anyway, there is a very easy solution to this issue. Just put the bass box or the so-called subwoofer to somewhere far from you, and, use a heavy clothes to cover it, or even place it in a box. I am serious. I think most of the 2.1 speakers have such trouble, the bass or low pitch sound is so loud and not clear that you can hardly get the mid-range, not mention that mit-range is a natural defeat of 2.1 system. Trust me, though this speaker's mid-range is not very ideal, it is totally acceptable, in particular if you are just looking for a "not bad" speaker. What you need is only to make the volume a little higher, and block the shocking wave from the subwoofer.
If you are an ear-sensitive listener, of course you should buy a 2.0 system, or a high-quality headphone, such as beyerdynamic.
If you are looking for a speaker for gangsta rap or party music, go for it. This speaker's bass can blast any people standing in
the front of it. If you are looking for a regular speaker, think before you buy it by the normal price $60-70, since you may have
other options on this money level. If you find a nice deal as I found, do not hesitate. What you need to do is just to find a proper position to place it. I saw many people placed their bass box near the monitor and complained its sound is too heavy. What a pity.
By the way, its mid-range is mostly from the bottom of satellites, but it does not matter too much since there is an angle between the bottom and the desk. Now I put the satellites on my desk and the subwoofer near the corner, with my poor clothes:) It works perfect for me and the control panel on satellites is very convenient, since the subwoofer is covered... :p
