A couple of steps forward, and a couple of steps back [Posted on 2008-08-30] There are a number of in depth reviews detailing the problems and improvements of this iPod over its predecessors, so I will be relatively brief. I previously owned a 4th generation iPod, and bought this model after my prior version was involved in aquatic accident. Before that, I owned a Creative Labs Zen Xtra (an excellent digital music player).
Overall, I'm fairly happy with the device. The sound quality is decent, and the battery life is a big improvement over my last iPod. The ability to download pictures and videos onto the device is also a nice touch, although the screen is small enough that this is more of a novelty than anything else (I get a headache watching anything longer than 20 minutes). The screen is very bright and is still somewhat readable even in direct sunlight.
There are two major downsides. First, the click wheel is not nearly as responsive as the one on prior versions. Scrolling through artist or album lists is a chore. The software allows you to skip down the list alphabetically (jumping directly from A to B to C) if you scroll down fast enough, but this feature seems to activate randomly. Sometimes I have to scroll for 15 seconds to get to the T's, and sometimes this feature will activate and almost instantly take me to the end of my artist listing as I quickly scroll through the alphabet without realizing what has happened.
The second downside is the unresponsiveness of the software. It can take up to five seconds for an album cover or covers to load after selecting an artist or a song. During that time, the iPod controls will not respond. This can be frustrating when you are trying to quickly select a particular album or track, and downright annoying if you are trying to adjust the volume after selecting a particularly loud song. Other reviews indicate that this can be ameliorated by disabling the "view album artwork" feature, but this would take away some of the visual appeal of the device.
Despite these problems, I am pleased with the device overall. The screen has held up very well despite the rigors of daily subway travel, the sound quality is acceptable, and I usually only have to recharge the iPod once every week or two. I would definitely consider another iPod if anything happens to this one.
Ipod [Posted on 2008-08-30] I am a bit disappointed with the resposiveness of the ipod when playing the games especially Vortex.Otherwise I am satisfied with my new ipod.
Pretty sweet, occasional issues though [Posted on 2008-08-30] I really like this, but occasionally I have software errors. I have had to manually reset it before. Also, the cover art is slow to appear at times and the "cover flow" feature is pretty slow to update as you toggle through your selection. Other than that it's pretty legit.
should have went with creative x-fi [Posted on 2008-08-30] apple really suckers people in with these products. you can not just add mp3 files you have to use thier i-tunes software or the player does not recognize them as music files, So after spending 6 hours downloading thier software on my slow internet connection because it was not included with the player I finally got some mp3s on it. I feel that for $250 you should get a user adjustable eq, but no. the presets kinda suck and the sound quality is tolerable at best. any video the software converts for use on the ipod are lacking audio, the video plays but there is no sound. the only good thing I can say about this player is it has a lot of storage space. I guess I should have went with the creative x-fi
More than I expected. [Posted on 2008-08-31] When I ordered the 80 gig iPod for my teenage son, I had no idea how many wonderful features it had. I have enjoyed seeing his excitement over finding all the neat things it will do. We love the pictures of the albums, being able to "flip over" the picture and see the list of songs on the "back," and being able to watch videos on the iPod. When I ordered it, I just knew it had a lot of memory, so it would hold lots of songs. I did not know how great the video features would be. We are thrilled with this purchase.
