EZ Bus DTS [Posted on 2007-10-06] This enclosure is a dog.
The first one I ordered the switch would not keep the unit on.
Apricorn had me send it back and replaced it as they agreed it was a switch power failure.
The one they sent back had exactly the same problem.
I am not going to waste any more money sending this one back.
I will eat my losses and look for another brand enclosure.

Unwise Choice [Posted on 2007-11-23] I was using this unit with a Tivo series 3 to add storage space. After using for several months, I started having issues with my Tivo rebooting numerous times a day. After replacing the e-sata cable without improvement, I ordered a replacement hard drive. With the new hard drive the Tivo continued to reboot. I finally swapped out the enclosure with an enclosure from a different manufacturer and my reboot issues are gone!
I then tried using this enclosure with the external drive from my other Tivo and the Tivo would not even recognize the hard drive! Needless to say, I ordered a new enclosure from the other manufacturer for next day delivery from Amazon. Both Tivo's are running fine again with the different enclosure.
Another thing, the cooling fan is loud. Before it died, I had to move it out of the bedroom and into an entertainment unit where I couldn't hear it. I would not recommend this unit for use with a Tivo or where noise is a factor.
Works as advertised [Posted on 2007-12-08] Using this as a portable backup solution for multiple standalone PCs. Works well with the 500G SATA drive I have.
Has been detected properly first time by every PC (W2000 & XP) its been plugged into without having to load supplemental drivers.
Case is sturdy and keeps drive cool. The stand makes it very stable.
Originally very good design but now fan runs too slowly [Posted on 2007-12-19] I own two of these units. The first was purchased Feb 2007, and the second purchased July 2007. The first unit cools my hard drive very well (max HD temp is 30 degrees Celsius in a 72 degree F room). The second unit does not cool very well - maximum HD temp ran to 51C in a 72F (22C) room. Upon calling Apricorn tech support I found out that they changed the design of this enclosure and made the cooling fan run more slowly to reduce noise. They did this by running the fan from the 5V power instead of from the 12V power. (The fan is a 12V fan)
I checked my enclosures and sure enough the most recently purchased enclosure has it's fan wired to run off of the 5V power supply.
While a hard drive temp of 51C is still considered legitimate, some folks might not want their drives to get that hot. It would be nice if Apricorn put a switch in these enclosures that would let the user decide which fan speed they wanted.
On the plus side I have found Apricorn tech support to be very helpful - when the fan in the first unit started clattering after 9 months of service, Apricorn quickly sent me a replacement that fixed the problem.
I have used these enclosures in both SATA and USB modes. I did notice that when used in USB mode the enclosure would sometimes go offline when I used other kinds of USB devices like a memory stick and a USB extender hub. I am not sure which device was at fault but there definitely was some incompatibility on my computer between these USB devices (Dell Dimension 4550).
P.S. The hard drive used during these tests was the WD5000AAKS Western Digital 500GB SATA drive.
Nice [Posted on 2008-07-26] I've been using this for a few days for my DVR expander with a 500 Gb WD drive. It works according to expectations. My previous fanless enclosure was getting too hot. The fan in this enclosure does the job and is very silent. The red LED is unobtrusive and indicates drive activity. Installation is very simple. Quality aluminum looks and feels great. Enclosed cables seem of higher quality than those provided with other, cheaper enclosures.
