WARNING: Generates higher voltage than selected for light loads [Posted on 2007-07-30] I recently had a portable voice recorder fried by a Coby "universal" AC adapter only to discover that it delivered a much higher voltage than I set it for. For light loads, such unregulated universal adapters will deliver more voltage than desired potentially damaging electronics that don't have (enough) over-voltage protection built-in. Upon checking with a meter, I observed an output of ~10V with the voice recorder attached instead of the 3V I set it for.
If you are willing to pay a few dollars more, take a look at the Velleman compact adapter (PSSMV1) (see Amazon: Compact Universal AC Adapter Power Supply). The Velleman is actually a _regulated_ switching DC power supply which consistently produces the voltage it is set for and runs extremely cool. Even with no load attached, the Velleman produces exactly what it is set for. The next time I have to replace another AC adapter, I will be buying another Velleman compact switching DC power adapter (and will likely even pick up a spare before the need arises ;-).
Good enough product [Posted on 2007-10-25] I bought this product for my portable CD player. I was a little confusing deciding on the polarity of the plug but once figured out it has been working just fine. Worth the price.
Poor instructions, risk damaging equipment [Posted on 2007-11-30] I purchased the Coby adapter because it was suggested to go with the folding Panasonic speakers that I also bought. The instructions where not clear, and I take any electronics classes in grade school so I know nothing of polarity. I took the one tip that fit into the speakers, flipped the switch to the suggested setting, and I got nothing but buzzing. I feared that I would be damaging the speakers, so I packed it up and returned it to Amazon. I trust that I will be refunded.
Bad, bad, bad [Posted on 2008-06-27] I needed a universal adapter. I plugged this one in and set it at 6 dc. The batteries melted and the light burned out. This was for a magnifier that I use every day. Should have gone to the company and purchased the adapter for this magnifier. Will not do it again. In the long run this adapter cost me more money. Thanks for nothing. <><
Didn't work [Posted on 2008-10-09] Even though it had a lot of different sized plugs, the plug size still didn't fit my rca telephone. So it really didn't work.
