Awesome, But.... [Posted on 2008-02-22] This Creative Zen V Plus really is exceptional: it has a great design, it's really easy to use, and it's a great investment!
However, as to be expected, this player has its flaws. I have owned two--the joystick of the first's broke, but fortunately it was within warranty and I was able to obtain another. I enjoyed the second one for about 8 months until a fairly common design flaw kicked in and the screen faded away. Now the display is completely black, and I'm navigating it blindly.
I won't give the player a bad review because it truly was awesome while it lasted, but I'm really disappointed with regards to its durability.
How difficult is it to build an mp3 player that works? [Posted on 2008-03-10] We bought a Creative Zen V Plus 2GB mp3 player and its been nothing but problems. The player froze in its first 5 minutes of use ( we were just navigating the menus to explore the device). Now you have to go find a small pin to reset the device. I figured it had a downlevel software version and we updated it. It still shouldn't have frozen out of the box.
After 3 weeks of use, it froze on the recovery screen. None of the buttons were responding, so we plugged it in to the computer. The recovery screen mysteriously went away. Too bad it still wouldn't respond to any of the buttons and was just stuck playing a random song.
Creative's support site has a link to a "recovery tool" and all it did was flash the software again. It booted again but none of the buttons are responding again. After one more restart, it won't even boot now.
If you do a quick search for zen plus reset in your favorite search engine, you will find a lot of people in the same boat.
It is pathetic that the support site has to have a "recovery tool" that they are "happy to introduce...that resolves the majority of player problems quickly." Thanks for bricking the mp3 player Creative. We will never consider a product made by them again.
Sounds great, but save your money [Posted on 2008-04-02] This player has been NOTHING but a problem ever since we purchased it as a gift for my daughter, and Creative's customer service leaves a great deal to be desired (i.e. don't even bother calling unless you really, really enjoy frustration and being treated badly.) The player freezed up for the first time within a month of purchase and though we managed to 'fix' or reset it several times, now at eight months it's completely dead. What makes me even sadder is we purchased the travel speakers that fit the unit as part of the gift and now those are essentially useless as well since they were made to fit the V Plus.
Searching on fixes across internet forums shows this player is just a dog and very few are still working a year after purchase. I would never recommend this player to anyone, and I won't be purchasing another Creative product ever. I really dislike the overpriced and hyped Ipod and my FANTASTIC Dell DJ of eight years is no longer being made, so I guess it's time to try the Zune.
Loved it, but then it broke [Posted on 2008-05-26] I got my zen v plus about a year ago. The first one that i had, worked great for about four weeks, then the screen lost it's color, and i could only see about the middle strip of the screen.
I sent it back to amazon and received a new one. This one lasted for about a year. Then all of a sudden, the cover for the joystick broke. Now, i can't scroll through the screens in one direction. I don't know if that happened to anyone else, but needless to say, even though it broke, it was a great little mp3 player for the price, and it had really good color pic, and video.
Now that this one is broken, i ordered a creative zen, 2 GB. Hopefully, it works for longer than my zen v plus did.
2nd one I've had [Posted on 2008-08-12] My 1st Zen somehow got fried when I charged it after 2 years of excellent service, so I bought a second. The physical size is perfect for travel, use on the treadmill or walking. The sound quality is fine and since I use it mainly for audio books, the bookmarking feature is a must.
