just got it and it works fine [Posted on 2007-12-18] i connected my ipod nano 1st generation to my Sony receiver and can now play my podcasts through my main stereo system as well as recharge the ipod at the same time. but i haven't had it long enough to know the longevity of this thing...
Basically what I wanted [Posted on 2008-07-28] I wanted a small, compact device that would allow me to connect my video iPod to a TV so my kids could watch Magic School Bus or whatever show they're into at the moment while away at a hotel. If one wants to do just this, there are way cooler devices to buy (like a Slingbox) but I can't keep buying toys so this was relatively cheap and easy.
And it works well, too. I make a high-resolution iPod rip of some movie (624x480) and the quality though the iPod - Dynex - TV is laudable. There are no bells and whistles. You get S-video out and composite outs (yellow, white, red cables). No HDMI, but really. Power on/off is a switch on the side of the dock. The dock charges your iPod.
Remote control is kinda lame -- a thin credit card with (5) membrane buttons: play/pause, >>|, <<|, and volume + and -. The remote has strangely begun to bow - developing concavity - as if it's shrinking - perhaps it is. This remote begs to be lost over and over again, slipping into the deepest recesses of the sofa amid the stray pennies and Froot Loops. The remote now lives in the kitchen junk drawer and I control the dock with a Logitech Harmony 520 universal remote.
One thing to bear in mind: as with other docks, volume needs to be controlled via the remote -- wheeling the iPod volume up has no effect.
