Great sounding earplugs [Posted on 2005-09-19]
The ER-20s are great plugs. I used them at the Rolling Stones concert where I was on the railing of the small stage (about 5 feet from the Stones on stage), and separate sound system from the main stage. Every note was clear and true. No ringing in ears afterward or the next day, as with most concerts, and could really hear the high end in proportion to the mids and bass, unlike foam earplugs.
Only reason they didn't get a 5-star rating was that even though the ANSI rating for them is 12db, Etymotic claims they are closer to 20db sound reduction -- which is closer to what you experience when you stick your fingers in your ears -- and that's a little too much sound attenuation. Ety sells 9db and 12db plugs for musicians, but these require an Audiologist to make molds of your ears to use ($200-$500). If they could make these generic plugs 12db, it would be excellent for Rock concerts.
Helpful hints: Buy Murine Earwax removal kit (you can use 50% warm water, 50% hydrogen peroxide after the supplied drops run out) to clean your ears _before_ using these -- remember, they go _in_ your ear canals, and buy Bausch & Lomb "Moisture Eyes Liquid Gel" for aiding in inserting -- you _must_ moisten them to insert and earwax doesn't taste that great.

As a fighter jet mechanic, noise is always a constant. On a typical work day I wear ear protection for the entire shift. With the foam style plugs I was constantly removing them to have a conversation; with these all conversations are clearly audible. While wearing communication headsets I'd do what most everyone else does and half way insert the foamies, not anymore. They do protrude from the ear somewhat and my co-workers have made some comments on interference with their headsets.
Etymotic has some great information on their site regarding these plugs. As with their website I do not recommend these as sole protection around running engines (170+ db), but I highly recommend them to anyone around constant noise.

These earplugs are great. I use them in the cinema (most cinemas in Peru are way too loud) and for practicing on the drums. They perfom as advertised. In fact, I own 3 pairs.
