With normal use, the built in filters will collect ear wax and reduce the volume of the ear piece. A replacement set is included with the earphones, and after a year, I had to decide to purchase a new pair of earphones at $149 at the time, now $74 or a 6pack of replacement filters at $50 from Etymotic direct. I really liked the fit of the earphones and the replacement filters rejuvinate the earphones to make them sound brand new.
