PRETTY GOOD [Posted on 2007-03-08] great for watching DVDs and playing CDs.
ONLY downfall would be my remote does not work!!
Broken within 2 weeks [Posted on 2007-04-27] I bought 2 of these DVD players. They were put in one position on top of the TV or on a shelf and never moved. One only worked with the remote from the very beginning. None of the buttons on the device worked. Within 2 weeks the other didn't work at all. Not with the remote, and none of the buttons worked. What a piece of JUNK!!!!
Wish i never wasted my hard earned money! [Posted on 2007-11-21] I brought three of these. one hardly worked straight out the box. only one remote doesnt work. two of the three dvd players just stop working. one minute u are watching a dvd and when you take it out to change it the next disc or the same one for that matter comes up "bad disc" i have only had them for about two and a half months. I am so disappointed. so now i will have to buy a new dvd player. It is really sad that they were only made in may of 2007.
GPX D1816 DVD Player [Posted on 2008-07-30] Excellent DVD Player for the price -- No Bells or Whistles but easy to set up, simple to operate and plays EVERYTHING -- I have bought 3 of them so far (one for me and 2 for gifts)
Gap-Filler [Posted on 2008-09-22] If you come across this model, note that there are two versions: one made for the international marketplace and one for US-only (though both have been distributed in the US).
You want the international version: Be certain the box says the unit is capable of both NTSC and PAL output. This will assure that you can play international disks from all regions. (You may need to find the region hack at videohelp-dot-com, but both the units I bought were code-free out of the box.)
If the box does not mention a choice of output, do not buy, even for the bargain price. You'll be getting the US-only version which does not have the built-in converter. This will restrict you to Region One, NTSC (North American) format disks only.
I had the (I assume) odd opportunity of seeing both versions displayed side-by-side in a job lot store. If you see a similar display, you may also note that the box for the US version is SLIGHTLY smaller than the international. (In fact, for that reason I almost bought it -- thought it'd be easier to carry; but then noticed the NTSC/PAL option was not mentioned on the U.S. box. Sure enough, after doing some online research, I discovered why. See above.)
That said, this unit is an adequate gap filler. If you need a cheap way to access disks outside region 1 or to convert PAL format to NTSC output (or vice versa) you can add this to your chain of entertainment devices.
However, being a cheaply made model, it's prone to malfunction, as some reviews here have said. The malfunctions of mine -- which only showed up recently -- are mild, but annoying. The tray only stays open for a few seconds before sliding closed. And I have to go through an elaborate shut down and reboot process to access the Setup menus with the remote -- otherwise I can only use basic features.
I have other media players for more rugged and consistent use, but as I say, to give yourself a little extra versatility where you might not want to spend mucho bucks to get a versatile box, this little deal plugs right in and does the job. (That said, for standalone players, you don't really need mucho bucks anymore. If you want one unit that allows you to be region free, play PAL or NTSC disks, and be able to play DivX & AVI files into the bargain, with a USB port and slots for data cards that can ALSO be played, the Avayon DXP 1000 G2 is your baby -- and at their website not much more than twice the cost of this GPX.)
