Customer Reviews:

Yeah, sure they are good heaphones. [Posted on 2005-08-23]

I bought these as a college student who wanted a good audio setup but knew that for headphones get you much more bang for your buck in terms of audio quality compared to speakers. I paired them with an RA-1 audio amp, and yeah, they sounded great, but they are a hastle if you do any casual listening.

These things are fragile and need to be taken care of, which some people like, but if you want to use things every day its a hastle. I later got some Sennheisers (HD590s) and some nice Sonys (MDR-SA5000, MDR-SA1000) and those are fantastic! you don't have to worry about putting them in there case (though I admit a wood case is very cool), or putting them down safely. The Grados are luxury items and must be treated as such, while the Sennheisers and Sonys are solidly built awesome headphones for everyday use. Also, lets say you sometimes use your headphones with your computer for gaming or listening to music for many hours. The RS-1s will become a pain after about 3 hours since they have a lot of direct contact with your ears, whereas Sennhesier and Sony make 10 hour use no problem at all. Again, you may be a purest and would balk at the idea of listening to MP3s and Doom3 with nice headphones, but if you play doom3 and listen to MP3s should you have a second pair of headphones for 'cheap' listening? no! Point being, if all you want is to escape for 1 hour a day with awesome headphone listening, then yes, these are 5 star headphones... as good as any!
If you want headphones you can use for critical listening, casual listening over long periods, are a little messy with your stuff, or would ever use headphones for gaming, then check out Sennheiser and Sony's high end stuff.
If you are tech

Awesome.. but pricy!!!! [Posted on 2005-09-03]
In short, the Headphones, though not very neutral are great for music. If you want the Grado slam and also want to play games, the the 325i (or perhaps the PS1s) would be best suited bbecause of their more crisp clear and impactful performance.

But for music, the rounded and slightly colored experience of the RS1 are simply a goose bump experience :-)..

The ultimate sound delivery system [Posted on 2006-05-13]
Like other Grado's the RS-1's look like a throughback to the headphones I used on my crystal radio set of the late 50s. Unlike my Grado 125's, however, the materials used in the RS-1 are far superior and such be considering the price.

Having said that, these headphones produce, without a doubt, the best electronically-produced sound quality that I have ever experienced. I have written reviews for the 125's, Senn's and the Koss Pro 4a's as well as cheaper sets I use on an MP3 player. While many of these models give you great bang for the buck, they fall far short of the RS-1, the sound from which reveals even the most minute detail with the vibrancy of a live performance.

These puppies are fair trade items, so you'll be forking out $695 unless you find an unscrupulous dealer or buy a used set on eBay. I was able to get free 2nd day shipping and no sales tax, and that helped a bit. If you can afford them, they are worth ever penny.

Best headphones I have ever heard! [Posted on 2007-12-02]
I bought these to see how they compared to my Sennheiser HD-650's. The difference is remarkable.I do all my listening with headphones so I have gone thru about 5 difference kinds. These are amazing. Heavy choral parts(ie Bach B Minor Mass) are "sweet" not "edgy".

If you love music you need these!.

Much better than the lower range cans. [Posted on 2008-08-11]
I own a SR125 and these blow those way out of the water. The sound is fuller and richer. The 125 sounds flat in comparison. The difference is huge. Definately worth buying if you have the cash.
