I-talk is awesome [Posted on 2008-05-05] This little device is the easiest recording device I own. Although the results are a little compromised due to the small space between microphones and the smallness of the whole device it still picks up all of the details in clear sound. It also has automatic adjustment for the level of input as well as pause and (my favorite) delete options from your I-pod.
Problems [Posted on 2008-05-20] I used this device to record family members watching a dvd of converted 8mm family movies so I could add the recording as narration. Large random chunks of the recording were missing. I couldn't tell if the recorder stops automatically during quiet periods. The manual/specs didn't say anything about that. Garbage.
Almost perfect [Posted on 2008-06-05] I do a lot of interviews, so the iTalk has become an essential part of my work life. It does a great job recording audio, with a couple of caveats. Expect the mic to pick up the whir-click of the iPod hard drive, which will keep you from ever getting a perfect recording. Also expect weird static interference to sweep through the recording now and then, particularly if you're using the iTalk near other electronics (like laptops, cell phones, etc.). That would be a problem for me if I were recording audio for broadcast purposes, but since I'm basically using the iTalk to archive interviews, I can live with it.
Griffin Mic OK if settings are right [Posted on 2008-06-09] Bought the Griffin iTalk Pro - Microphone after trying one of my friends. For $20 it works pretty well. On music ( I record my gigs for my own review) set the sensitivity to LOW GAIN.
Pros- picks up bass well, records in near cd quality (14 bit, 44.1K). Records meetings well.
Cons-automatic gain setting abruptly switches from hi to low and sounds like a bad connection and drop out, not a big deal when recording voice but ruins music.,
No published specs on external mic input jack.
Stereo spread not great, could be better if mics face away from each other a bit.
You have to reset sensitivity every time you use it. Would be nice to just have a switch on the mic.
Best cheap thing I ever bought... [Posted on 2008-06-18] I bought this as a backup recording device for emergency and for fun... but it has ended up being great. THe recording quality is amazingly clear and good, and even in a crowded room can pick out what you want it too. I've used it to record interviews, sample environments, and do little demo songs so that I don't forget and can use them as scratch tracks for recording... very nice, super easy to use, and small and cheap. perfect for what it is.
