Hauppauge PVR-150MCE "White Box" [Posted on 2008-06-10]
It a very good unit for the price.
It is very Linux friendly, which was a critical factor in its purchase and works very well using MythTV. Any problems I had were user errors and not the fault of the device. The picture quality is pretty decent using the S-Video connection. I didn't want to spend a lot of money since I'm not a big TV fan and had no idea if I was going to be successful setting up MythTV. If I had to do it again I would have gotten the unit with the FM tuner. I also give Hauppauge a lot of credit for making it clear which units were analog and may stop working in 2009. I know this is the law, but they did it in bold print and did not hide it with fine print.
There really isn't much to say, other than it just works.

Hardware works but no software included. [Posted on 2008-06-21]
I purchased this video capture card so I could put some of my old home movies on DVDs. The installation was easy enough, and the hardware seems to work fine. But (and this is a big "but"), there's no software included other than the device drivers. Windows Movie Maker doesn't capture the source sound, and various freeware programs like VirtualDub don't work with DirectShow, which is what this card uses. Other freeware programs like Debut, do not capture analog video. I purchased Sony Vegas and it only captures digital video via a firewire connection. It looks like I'm going to have to spring for either Pinnacle Studio or Corel's Ulead to get any kind of use out of this thing.

All in all, it's not a completely bad piece of hardware. However, make sure you get somekind of video capture software with it. Otherwise you're going to end up paying more in the long run.

Does NOT work with Vista 64 [Posted on 2008-07-02]
I've had this card for three years. I purchased it bundled with Beyond TV 4. It was mediocre to average. Picture quality was fairly low, but I never recorded from it or anything so that didn't bother me too much. However the drivers for it are awful. Whenever I hd to update my drivers it was a huge hassle because I could not remember what model card I had (the 150 and 250 look very similar). The model number is not stamped on the actual card, and Windows and the drivers do not identify it. It is simply listed as a Hauppauge TV device.

The WinTV application software that comes with it is a joke and is absolutely awful. It looks like something that was created 10 years ago (since it's called "WinTV 2000" that might be accurate).

My main problem with this card though, and the reason it gets rated so low from me, is that it doesn't work with Vista 64 bit operating systems with 4GB of ram. It just won't work at all. They won't update the drivers so it will work (like they did with a few of their cards), so the only way to get it to work is to make Vista downgrade my ram to 3.5, or to get a new operating system. The $130 card I bought is essentially worthless now. And since it's an analog TV Tuner and everything will be digital in 7 months, there's really no reason anyone should buy this card unless it is selling on clearance for $10 or so.

Great Product! Couldn't go Wrong. [Posted on 2008-07-13]
I've been using this card for a little over a month and haven't had any problems with it. The picture Quality is awsome! A must have for any Media Center Pc's.
