Nice sounds, easy to use, eaasy to change time accidentally [Posted on 2008-06-17] Pros: Nice clock, nice projection, easy to set clock and alarms, decent sounds
Cons: WAY too easy to accidentally change the time by hitting the wrong button on top.
Nice starter sounds assortment for the money [Posted on 2008-06-30] There's a little bit of sensory deprivation between the brain and nature when you live in an urban environment. If you have a window that looks out into another building, or a wall, or you feel very urban these modern days, then you need a bit of artificial nature to soothe the soul.
Start with the sounds of nature.
I recently picked up a Homeomedics Nature Alarm Clock for $29.99 at Bed, BAth & Beyond. This sound machine plays the radio, but also gives me choices of Thunder, Summer Night, Rainforest, Rain and Ocean. There's also a button for Waterfall, but everyone who has heard it agrees it's really just White Noise. Which is fine if you like that. :)
I enjoy all the choices tremendously. Summer Night reminds me of my childhood in Upstate New York with the nightjar bird and cricket insect noises. Ocean makes me feel nostalgic for trips to the coast, complete with seagull cries and washing surf. Rainforest is a nice morning sound but I can't sleep with it on (the bird calls remind me of morning noises and interfere with my late night mood). Thunder and Rain are nice nighttime sounds to sleep to.
I wish there were some other choices, like a Babbling Brook sound, or dockside sound, or different ocean sounds. I have heard those sounds on other machines, but this REALLY is a nice product for the money and does have a good starter sound assortment.
OK while it lasted [Posted on 2008-07-18] This is a good entry-level sound machine, but don't expect amazing quality. The projection time was great, but only lasted about 3 or 4 months and then stopped functioning. It just forecasts 88:88.
The sounds are OK, but fairly repetitive / "low budget". If you are interested in a sound machine, I'd recommend checking out the Brookstone line. I just upgraded to the Brookstone travel alarm tranquil moments sound machine. The sound quality is much improved. There is no projection on that clock, but then again, there isn't on my version of this product anymore, either.
The other product is easier to travel with. I will take when staying in a hotel to avoid hearing lots of outside noises.
Great idea; so-so design [Posted on 2008-07-28] My favorite aspects are: 1) it's easy to project the time onto the ceiling in a big font size; 2) the sounds (e.g., ocean) are relaxing. The aspects that I like the least are: 1) there are a lot of small buttons and it's impossible to tell which is which except in a well-lit room. It would be better if the labels were lit up. 2) the volume and radio tuner are adjusted by moving a dial. It's easy to move the device and accidentally turn down the volume. This can be a problem if you've set the clock-radio alarm and the radio volume is too low. 3) the ocean and other sounds are good in theory, but the sound quality is sub-par
Evil in a box [Posted on 2008-08-08] When on vacation, we realized we had forgotten our daughters white noise machine, we went to a nearby walgreens and this was the only white noise machine choice.
The recorded sounds are extremly poor quality. The green numbers in front and the projection are too bright. The lights completely filled the room, it seemed there was no way to escape the surface-of-the-sun-bright lights. We ended up having to throw a big bath towel over it, which dimmed the lights but also drowned the sounds.
