good hardware; poor software [Posted on 2008-01-10] If you want current readings, it is very nice. The record-keeping software is very poor. Trying to view the records of anything other than the past 24 hours is very erratic and usually impossible. I have never seen any product with worse software.
TE923W Not Accurate [Posted on 2008-01-24] I bought the TE923W 'Advanced' weather station in May 2007 & spent 8 months trying to get it to work properly without success. The company (actually made by Hideki) sent me a succession of components to try in the place of those that didn't work properly but none were any better that the originals. I went thru 4 Wind Speed indicators that were consistently 50-60% low, 2 Rain guages that were about 40% low & 3 base units that were OK but weren't getting correct information from the sensors. The UV indicator was likely low too as it never showed more than 1/3 of it's range even at noon on a sunny day. I didn't have another UV indicator to compare against this, but did have other wind speed & rain guages. Apart from these inaccuracies, there is no way to get a total rain amount after a week has elapsed. This information disappears & is not available until the 1st day of the next month when you get last month's total! It uses a total of 14 batteries & a wall wart which isn't exactly economical & the illuminated display is difficult to read except at just the right angle. If you want an atomic clock & reasonably accurate temperature & humidity readings, you can buy a unit for about $30 instead of the $300 I paid. After 8 months of this screwing around, Hideki kindly offered to buy this so called 'Advanced' weather station back for 50% of what I paid for it. I hope this information keeps someone else from wasting their money on this as I did.
TE923W review [Posted on 2008-03-15] I agree with all who say the directions are TERRIBLE and I'm good w/reading manuals. There are mistypes, MUCH missing information and MANY assumptions that you will have to guess or figure out on your own. Once we got the unit set up, some things worked well, others didn't. The temp & humidity are OK. The TEMP w/WIND CHILL is off. No matter what the wind chill is, say 22, the TEMP w/WIND CHILL is always the SAME as the regular TEMP(WITHOUT wind chill factor). I'm going to try to reset the unit and revisit this in the spring. ALSO, it is now DST and the CLOCK on the unit has NOT reset, nor has the sunset & sunrise. It reads time automically from the Atomic Clock, so I don't know what the problem is. I tried to reset the clock an hour ahead manually and that worked until the next day when the Atomic clock reset itself back an hour to the incorrect time!
Many Technical Problems, Poor User Manual, Very Limited [Posted on 2008-04-19] The 433 MHz sensor links work very well, but the sensor-to-base-station software protocols are very unreliable. For example, if the UV sensor doesn't report often enough, the base station logs it offline PERMANENTLY, and the only way to fix it is to reboot the base station (remove all power and batteries). This happens about once every 3 days. Altitude compensation only goes up to 1650 feet (+/-). I live at 5,775 ft, so the barometer reading is useless to me without doing some mental math. The worst technical problem is the software (v.1.3 of WeatherCapture). Try as I might, I cannot get this software to download data from the base station; and I am a senior engineer at an aerospace company! Finally, the user manual is (a) a very poor translation from Chinese and hard to read, (b) disorganized (set-up instructions scattered throughout the descriptive sections) and (c) has no base-station-to-PC setup protocol instructions. Neither are there any set-up instructions with the software distribution disk. Very nice workmanship on the base station and remote controller. Flimsy sensors (all-plastic). If you want to actually record your data, you will need a working PC interface, which this apparently doesn't have; and you should spend more money on a more-professional set of gear.
Don't Waste Your Money [Posted on 2008-04-28] I bought this product after reading many of the issues associated with the original product had been addressed. Boy, was I wrong.
The first thing you notice is that the User Manual is very poorly written. Instructions are very unclear and in some instances contradictory. The terminology used to describe the individual components indicate that the instructions may have been translated by someone with limited technical abilities.
Then there is the software. This is the most poorly written software I have ever seen. The instructions are terrible and it does not work - you can not input your location information and expect correct sunrise and sunset calculations. Worse, the software included is NOT the software indicated on the package. Hideki's answer, "...well we did not charge you for the software." You have to be kidding!
Finally there is the poorest support you can imagine. The wind sensor did not work. I called, three times before I got someone who would return my call. They agreed to send a replacement. They never did. Finally, I fixed it myself.
If you want a toy, and a toy that will frustrate you - since setting it up, the rain gauge, and the thermo-hygrometer have both failed - then by all means buy this product. I would listen to the reviewers, avoid Hideki like the plague.
It is a real shame to see the Honeywell name attached to this junk!!! Poor product, and poor support!!
