Fantastic MP3 player that's worth its price [Posted on 2005-08-24] Since imitations are usually never as good as the original, I was expecting iRiver's MP3 player to be a pale (re: cheaply made) imitation of Apple's IPod. However, I am surprised and *extremely* pleased by the player's many capabilities.
The player is really easy to use and navigate. It also comes with a CD-Rom program for you to install on your computer in order to transfer music files, However, it is also compatible with Windows Media Player (provided your version has ripping capabilities).
Once you have ripped or downloaded your music files to your computer's hard drive, it is a matter of using the IRiver program to transfer the music files over to the player. The program allows you to create specialized folders to properly organize your music. All you have to do is drag and drop the files over into the folders in your player.
MEMORY:
The memory level of the player is awesome. You can easily store around 200+ songs (depending on the size of the files) on it. So far I have approximately 190 songs stored on my player, and I still have about 1/4 space left to add more.
SYSTEM:
You can program the player to play songs in the order you determine - even if the songs are stored in different folders. There are also repeat and shuffle capabilities for individual songs, the entire player or for specific folders. The player also has a hold button to avoid accidentally pressing buttons if you have the player in your bag. Plus it also has automatic shutdown; and the player resumes playing the song you were last listening to if the player is turned off or powers down. In addition to it's MP3 capabilities, it also has a quality FM radio system.
NAVIGATION SYSTEM:
The navigation system is controlled via joystick/knob that allows you to both control volume and adjust what play lists/folders you want to jump to. It's quite easy to master if you sit down with the player for about 20 minutes to acclimate yourself.
DISPLAY:
The display is a blue lit LCD that is extremely easy to read and, depending on how you label your music and folder files, will display song, artist and folder info. You can also adjust the display to show equalizing levels or the time.
SOUND:
The sound quality is also much better than expected. In fact, sound quality is *much* better than most portable disc-mans I have had in the past. The ear buds are at times hard to keep in my ears properly, but that's the extent of my problems with them.
Other extras include a protective case for the player, a sports arm band, and a wrist cord.
I would highly recommend getting this player if you are looking to get a quality MP3 player, but don't want to pay the price of an IPod.
