Excellent bargain for playing iPhone on stereo system! [Posted on 2008-03-08] Before finding this amazing $20 bargain, I was already connecting my iPhone to my stereo system, but it was ugly to look at, and it was a hassle to use.
I used to have to plug a 3.5mm audio cable into the headphone jack, and, to keep the iPhone charged, I had to tie up my excellent Apple Ipod Nano 1st, 2nd, 3rd Gen, Mini, Touch, Video, Classic, Photo, U2, Iphone 2-in-1 Retractable Hotsync & Charging USB Data Cable to connect it to my extra USB wall charger: iPod USB Travel Power Charger Adapter for Nano, Shuffle, 4G, Mini, Photo and U2- HHI Brand. Furthermore, I had to walk across the room every time I wanted to change track or even to pause.
Here are the +'s and -'s:
PLUSES:
* Handsome, solid, with cool blue light.
* The remote is tiny but remarkably powerful---it works from at least 25 feet, without aiming.
* Works exactly as advertised: can pause, play, fast forward, change track, and adjust volume.
* The product description states, "Note: The iPod's volume indicator does not appear when using the remote to change the volume." At least with an iPhone, this is NOT true---the volume indicator DOES appear on the screen.
* Comes with a 5' USB 2.0 cable! In many stores you could pay $10 just for this cable.
* Because it uses a standard USB cable [included] it frees up my specialized iPhone/iPod USB cable.
* If you ignore the warning message [see below] and do not switch to airplane mode, then you can answer phone calls while connected, but you have to touch the Speaker icon on the iPhone to hear the call---you do NOT hear it on your stereo system. At the conclusion of the call, it smoothly and automatically switches back to what you were listening to.
* I have not tried this feature (since I'm only connecting it to a stereo system) but it does have a Firewire port.
MINUSES:
* CANNOT NAVIGATE MENUS. I knew this when I bought it, but it's still a major nuisance to have to walk over to it to change albums. I REALLY wish the remote had this feature. Amazingly, this serious flaw is shared by Apple's own dock/remote combo, which costs twice as much and does not include any cables! See the many disgusted reviews of Apple Universal Dock- MB125G/A.
* Each time you plug the iPhone into the dock, an alarming warning message appears on the screen saying, "This accessory is not designed to work with iPhone." It goes on to say ask you if you want to switch to airplane mode to reduce audio interference, and puts "yes" and "no" buttons on the screen. If you ignore this warning it will automatically disappear after a few seconds, but you may indeed hear some clicking noises in the background. Most of the time I accept these background noises in order to be able to still receive phone calls, but for some recordings the clicking is too noticeable and I do indeed switch to airplane mode.
* You do not hear incoming phone calls through your stereo system. This is sad since this DOES happen if you simply plug the audio cable directly into the headphone jack of the iPhone.
* The appropriate included adapter plate does not fit the iPhone snugly---the positive aspect being that the gap in the front is SO large that I can press the Home button on the iPhone. The serious negative is that rather than mindlessly sliding the iPhone into a precise groove that makes it connect (as with Apple's own dock) you have to carefully adjust the position and angle of the iPhone to plug it in. It's annoying that this could have been avoided so easily by making the hole the right size!
ipod Harmony [Posted on 2008-04-08] I just recieved my ipod Cradle for my 30GB ipod. I knew you dont get full menu navigation support through the remote before i got it. From what I understand even the official Apple product doesnt do that. but it was still something that I wanted to get. Set up couldnt be simpler. it comes with interchangable plates for various ipods and a USB cable [another USB cable I thought. Ill add it to my collection.] and it has connections for firewire and 3.5mm jack.
I bought this one for the living room. i could just drop my ipod in the cradle and listen to music through my home theatre. you can navigate within an album easily, but not between albums like with a click wheel. They say that it wont show a volume display on the ipod when you use the dock but thats not true it works fine.
The remote could not be easier to use. But then again i never really intended to use the remote. I specifically bought this cradle because of its cost and IR functionallity. i have litterally tied every device together in the household grouped into specific activities using my Harmony 880 remote. and i have programmed my 880 to run my ipod now in the living room as a digital music server, i created a genaric activity i then renamed ipod Living Room. everything through one remote control. I had to do the set up for this device manually but it wasnt that hard to figure out, just following the directions. And the remote is completely customizable. A great buy that I highly recommend even at the cost.
An interesting twist. i ultimately want to get two of these cradles and put one in my room that would be hooked up to my computer and stereo in there. Something to note is that the ipod recieves power through the cradle only when you are using USB or firewire. it does not recieve power of course when you are using the 3.5mm jack only. So while my ipod is out in the living room it is just power straight from the battery. I noticed that my HD scientific atlanta cable box has a USB port in the front of it. I have no idea what it is for and it seems to be completely useless to me. I wondered if I plugged in my new USB cable, that i was about to throw into a drawer with all the rest, would be able to be useful after all. I plugged the USB cable into the front of the cable box and ran it descretely throught the back of hte cabinate and up into the ipod dock it suddenly lit up and started to run the ipod through wall power and charging it as well. That was also the first time I was able to see the blue light lit up, which is extremely bright.
all in all i am happy with this purchase. I wish I had complete control of the ipod. maybe some day. Logitech Harmony 880 Advanced Universal Remote Control
No video! [Posted on 2008-05-27] If you are planning to buy a cradle with video functionality dont buy this item. It's only for music
amazing product [Posted on 2008-06-04] This is a really good dock. I totally recommend this for anyone looking for an ipod dock. The ipod sound quality doesn't change. I don't know why the docks price is as low as 14 $. I think its just because of the brand name. don't go paying over 100 $. They all do the same thing, but the Insten is as good as the ones that are 100 $. The only problem with it is that the remote doesn't have the menu button, and also when you are buying this dock, you might want to get the ipod charger iPod USB Travel Power Charger Adapter for Nano, Shuffle, 4G, Mini, Photo and U2- HHI Brand which is like 2 $. also if you have an ipod nano 3rd generation keep in mind the video would not work with the dock.
Buy this...don't be stupid...this is a smart shop.
A Great Little Dock [Posted on 2008-07-01] I would definitely recommend this dock to anyone with any kind of ipod. The sound quality is great the remote makes my life so much easier and being a lot cheaper than the apple dock its a great buy.
