It is too warm for my ears [Posted on 2008-04-16] The sound quality is good. You would notice small hissing sound when the noise-cancellation is on. Also, you can't wear it for too long. The headphones feel like a pair of ear muffs. I can't wear it for more than a half hour.
CAUTION WITH JABRA C820S HEADPHONES [Posted on 2008-04-28] Jabra C820S Active Noise Cancelling Stereo Headphones
This product worked for about 3 days then the left ear cup quit working with the active noise cancellation switch on. I sent the item to the distributor in Canada for a replacement. So far, the new Jabra C820 noise cancellation headphones work alright. I would not recommend this item for serious isolation from external noise to get better stereo sound. They do not block out external high frequency noise. These Jabra headphones would work on a smaller low wattage stereo or television, but they have low capability for handling much volume without distortion. They do come in a very nice black zipper case with storage pocket, and adapter plugs. The headphones are very lightweight for wearing over the ears.
Good headphones [Posted on 2008-05-06] Above average sound and build quality.
Bought these based on reviews that said they were almost as good as the Bose equivalent models (but cheaper). Sound quality is very good. With the noise cancelling on the sound quality reduces slightly along with an increase in bass and volume. There is a low level hissing sound with Noise Cancelling turned on, however it's not too annoying and wouldn't be noticeable in a noisy environment such as a plane anyway.
The Noise Cancelling is very effective at reducing constant noise like jet engines. Other sounds are reduced but not entirely (takes the edge of them). As these are "over ear" headphones (like earmuffs) they passively reduce outside noise anyway. Your ears can get warm as they are fully enclosed within the headphones muffs, but are comfortable.
Comes in handy tuff zip case with enough room for an iPod Classic and USB cable. Various adapters are included as standard with the headphones.
Great product for the money [Posted on 2008-05-31] Very nice headphones (style, audio, carrying case). The noise cancelling works very well, but it does not literally "turn off the world" as other reviews might have you believe.
When you place the headphones on your ears -- even before you turn on the noise-cancelling functionality -- about 50% of the world disappears (the ear cups fit tightly around the ears and are very comfortable). When you turn on the noise-cancelling functionality, you will hear some light white noise, and about 2 seconds later about 90% of the world has disappeared. When you additionally play music through the headphones, the white noise gets drowned out completely and the world is gone.
The noise-cancelling blocks *constant* bass very well. Testing it while sitting next to an HVAC unit, it blocks all of the deep hum of the A/C chiller and about 90% of the higher-frequency sound of the fan. When I also play some music through the headphones (at a comfortable volume), the HVAC unit is silent.
When standing directly in front of a loud stereo (loud enough to start to shake the floor), it blocks ~90% of the higher-frequency melody and vocals. It blocks ~100% from my subwoofer and most of the other lower-frequency tones. I say 'most', because it seems to struggle a little with quickly-changing tones, which means that a low- to mid-range staccato drum beat will still partially come through. (I mentioned above that the noise-cancelling seems to require ~2s to 'turn on'. I believe that some of this time is due to the device turning on, and the remainder is due to response time -- would could explain why the device fails to completely block quickly-changing low-frequency tones.)
Since airplane engines emit a low-frequency and very constant tone, I have no doubt these headphones will do an awesome job on the plane -- near 100% blockage.
For $100, this product is an awesome buy.
Solid sound comfort, weak construction [Posted on 2008-06-11] I'm using noise-cancelling headphones for like 2 hours every day. I have used to own 4 different headphones models from Sony, AKG and Audio-Technica.
This is GREAT headphones. Sound is great (comparable to AKG Acoustics K-27i Folding Closed-back Headphones with Ambient Noise Attenuation and With In Line Volume Control), comfort is great (AKG is TERRIBLE, Sony model is just normal), sound cancellation is great (AKG model simply not working as promised, Sony model offers less cancellation).
The only drawback is weak links in construction. During the course of 1.5 years i did destroyed 3 pairs of this headphones - they just broke to 2 parts, right and left. But dont get me wrong - with less usage or with more care they will last longer.
And the funny part - this headphones seems to be the very same headphones as Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7 QuietPoint Active Noise-Cancelling Headphones in slightly different case - and Audio-Technica construction is slightly more solid (although they come with just 1 cable instead of 2 from Jabra).
So my conclusion - buy Audio-Technica or Jabra, depending on what model is cheaper now. Both are really great.
