Perfect Low Cost Item for Hiding all of Your Stereo Equipment [Posted on 2006-08-18]
I recently purchased a plasma TV and wanted to find a way to hide all the messy stereo equipment and dvd player. I had a perfect spot for the all the equipment in one of my kitchen cabinets but had no way to control the devices in there. I did a lot of research and was directed toward all these high end remote relay systems costing hundreds of dollars. I was about to give up and go with one of these systems when I came across the Terk Leapfrog. At $30 I figured it was worth the risk.

It turns out that this product is the perfect solution. It took 2 seconds to hook up. I just plugged in the little transmitter and hid it in a bookshelf in my living room and then placed the receiver inside the kitchen cabinet with the stereo equipment and I was done. The relay is so strong that it doesn't matter where you put it in the kitchen cabinet because the signal bounces all over the place. Terk included a special cable that lets you attach a mini relay directly to the front of the equipment you are trying to control, but this was unnecessary in my situation since it worked perfectly without it.

I highly recommend this product.

Problems with LCD TVs and florescent lights [Posted on 2007-01-11]
These things work great as long as there are no compact florescent lamps in the room. It trys to transmit the modulaton frequency of the lamp to the receiver. If the IR signal from the hand held remote is not considerably stronger than the lamp it will not work. The same problem happens with LCD TV sets. The display back light in the TV is the same technology at compact florescent lamps and will produce interference. Ironic that TVs interfere with a TV remote extender isn't it.

The problem is much worse of you have multiple receivers with one transmitter. The receivers near LCD TVs or florescent lamps will continously generate a radio signal and jam the other units.

For tech geeks: My Sony LCD TV display flashes at 54khz. Most IR remotes modulate their IR beam at 40khz. This unit accepts modulation frequencies from 5 khz to over 200 khz and modulates a 433 mhz RF carrier with the raw IR signal.
