Amazing Product [Posted on 2008-05-02] This remote is my new favorite gadget. My husband and I have a myriad of components in our home theater system and this controls almost all of them. The only items it does not control are those that use Blue Tooth instead of IR. However, the macros are incredible, and even for the devices that this remote won't control, I can set up a macro to switch the inputs on everything else. Previously we were using 7 remotes, and now we are down to 2. Vast improvement.
It is extremely easy to setup this remote and to make configuration changes to it. The list of compatible products on the manufacturers website is extremely comprehensive, and if there is anything not included, you can use it's existing remote to train the Harmony. This is a very easy, intuitive process. Setting up the macros is also a piece of cake, and modifying them in the future is just as simple. This remote has made everything so much simpler.
Good Buy [Posted on 2008-05-03] You can do every thing by connecting this remote to your PC. I recomend it is a good buy.
good quality poor setup [Posted on 2008-05-04] Fist off i will say that i got this for free as a promo from the manufacturer to help them market the product. I have owned about 12 universal remotes includes some cheap one 4 alls and two Philips Prontos and this has been the most difficult to set up.
I will state that the quality and fit and finish of the Harmony remote is really excellent. My biggest complaint about remotes I have owned are that when you press buttons the plastic flexes causing squeaking sounds the factory remotes on my Olevia and Philips Tv's both do that its very annying.
So what are my gripes?
#1 the software initially asks for exact model numbers of what it will be controlling. This worked well on new equipment but on my Sony big screen which is about 10 years old it causes issues when trying to switch video inputs. also when trying to get it to work with my Tivo it gets confused and does not send the proper volume signal for the TV. This is TEMPORARILY fixed by hitting help on the remote which "resyncs" the software but really never fixes the issue.
Ok here is my big compaints
The remote wants to try to simplify things by creating "macros" in order words it combines steps so for me it trys to do the following
1. turn tv on
2. switch to video 1
3. selects Tivo tuner
but in reality here is what it does
1. sometimes turns the tv on
2. switches the tv to the next available input (wrong inoput) and it does this because it can't understand that my tv does not recognize direct links for video 1 vide 2 etc instead my tv changes input every time you press the input button so in reality what the remote is telling the tv to do is switch to the next input which 3 out of 4 times wil be the wrong input.
Lastly the software is terrible
everything is based on a survey style web page. Want to make a change? first you answer yes to lets say 1 of 7 questions then that takes you to the next set of questions and so on and so on, which never really gets you anywhere in the end.
I wish I had a better product to suggest for you, personally I will stick with my Philips prontos 1 is almost 10 years old the other is about 4 years and both still work great.
Lastly i do want to restate I did not pay for this and i'm still sticking to the the fact that it STINKS!
Oh last complaint
there doesn't seem to be a power button on the remote just an off button at the top so you really are forced to use the "activities" menu to do basic things like turn your tv on.
I'm going to give this thing another two hours of labor to try to get it to work will call their tech support to see what they have to say but right now it looks like its going to end up in a junk box
Excellent Value [Posted on 2008-05-04] Not only does it replace all my remotes, it integrates them seamlessly. For example, when watching a DVD I don't have to flip back to receiver to change the volume. No touch screen like the Harmony One, nor are the buttons as well laid out. However, at less than half the price and all the functionality of a Harmony One, it is an excellent value.
Poor documentation leaves user nearly helpless [Posted on 2008-05-06] This is a beautifully built product that is nearly impossible to use because of bad implementation and nearly non-existent documentation. A device as complex as the 880 needs quite a bit of explanation in order not to befuddle the user; alas, there is nearly none. My installation is fairly simple: a Sharp Aquos 47" flat screen, an Onkyo Receiver, a Toshiba HD-DVD player, and a Sharp Blu-Ray player. That's all, but I never could get all of these devices fully working.
How so much effort could be expend for so little benefit is a mystery to me. The manufacturer doesn't explain how the Harmony 880 programs and how macros should be implemented; as a result, only half the functions in the Blu-Ray player respond to 880 commands; for the remainder of the functions, I have to set down the 880 and use the player's remote control to finish the job. No amount of fiddling with the 880 has helped.
I spent hours and hours fighting this poorly documented device and have very little to show for it. If the Wizard doesn't get an installation right, heaven help the user in trying to fix it afterward. If Logitech knew what they were doing, they'd write a decent instruction manual; the skimpy booklet they furnish is nearly useless. I'm an electronic engineer and I couldn't make this thing work right no matter what I tried. Save your money and stick with the remotes that came with your devices...at least they get the job done! This was a colossal waste of time.
