Why did I wait so long? [Posted on 2008-05-02] I have been using 3-4 remotes to control my setup for the past two years. After having the Harmony One for the past month I can't believe I waited so long to get a universal. Set up was a breeze,it only took me 20 minutes. You can cut your set up time by first gathering all the names and model numbers of your components. Once all your components are entered into the set up screen its simple to create multiple macros so you will only need to hit one button for your system to automatically turn on and set up to watch cable; one button changes the set up to listen to your ipod or you can even set it up to turn on the system and go directly to your recorded shows on your dvr.
If you want to control individual components the Harmony automatically replicates all the controls of every remote from each of your components.
One small thing I noticed is you need to make sure the remote is pointing at your system and wait for 1-2 sec for it to "transmit" otherwise I've had a couple of instances where some components don't turn on or respond.
Finally, I am realizing that for a modest system (like mine: only TV, cable box, DVR, receiver and DVD)there may be less expensive Harmony models that work sufficiently. Overall I love this and am recommending to everyone who is still using more than 2 remotes.
Harmony One - Finally a great remote! [Posted on 2008-05-02] A remote that really works! You can actually put away all of your other remotes. I have not needed any one of them since the day after I got this remote. I am running a Comcast DVR through an Onkyo receiver with attached Oppo DVD player, Panasonic DVD Recorder, a VCR, CD player, iPOD Dock to a Toshiba wide screen HD television. It took less than an hour to set it up with very minor troubleshooting (all amazingly anticipated with the software and corrected on the fly). The TV goes on and stays on (if applicable) as I switch functions or goes off (on music only applications) as appropriate. Icons for favorite channels are available (look up "square eyes" on the AVS Forum under the Harmony One section). It even feels good in the hand.
Awesome. Really. [Posted on 2008-05-03] The best universal remote that I've tried.
It was really simple to program, took us 5 mins to set up and load and create activities.
Activities are programed into the remote so that at the push of a button will turn on whatever associated electronics for that activity--e.g..watch a dvd: turns on DVD player, sound system and TV).
Thanks to this remote we were able to retire 8 other remotes.
We love it, the touch screen is very cool, the slim line design makes it ergonomic and sleek. Works like a charm.
I wouldn't recommend it for someone who is technologically challenged. Because of the software and programing--it would be a waste if you do not take advantage of these functions.
But otherwise highly recommended and truly a great product. Yay!
Great Remote Upgrade for 880 owner (BUT ....Has IR Cloning Flaw) [Posted on 2008-05-05] First I would like to say for people who owned Harmony 880 remote this is a worthy upgrade.
880 Owners will appreciate these changes:
-The screen resolution is much charper and high resolution (also the response time is quicker too no more ghosting changing pages) The color depth is better now too so custom channel graphics look fantastic too.
-The obvious upgrade is the addition of the touch screen. It does away with those 8 buttons off to the left/right side of the 880/890 screen.
-These new main butons are very rigid and are easier to feel when not looking at the remote. Also they are backlit in pure white and are much more visible then the 880 backlighting was.
-You can finally punch in the number digits while holding the remote with one hand. Some 880 users may remeber its tricky to punch in numbers with just one hand. Especially when you get to 789 and 0.. was hard to balance.
-Also you get 24 favorite channel icon spaces instead of 16. Advanced 880 users may have remembered the limited 16 graphical (icon) slots for a tv activity. These icons on the new screen are much sharper and great looking now!
Onto the bad news and reason for 4 stars and not 5:
The Cloning (learning) function on this remote is ultra senative to the point of not working for a hanful of owners. I read on AVS forums people have this problem and I still bought the remote hoping to not be effected. Sadly I was effected. I cannot clone anything. I tried base cap on and off. I tried pitch black room. I tried isolating it away from other devices (in the bathroom) I tried with and without usb hub. I called tech support and still they couldnt help me either. Eventually I got tech support to copy over the cloned commands from my 880 accounts devices into the new H1 accounts devices (if i didnt own the 880 i would have been out of luck) The tech support admited these H1 IR receivers are overly sensative to all forms of inteferace. Some users on AVS forums said only way they could clone was put the laptop in the bathroom.. then pull the wire and the remote into the bathtub (isolated away from the laptop) and clone the remote that way.
Speaking as an 880 owner... Cloning was flawless for me before on the 880. Now owning this H1 and not be able to clone anything (i mean i cant even get a false signal it just wont clone at all!)
I would only recommend this remote to tech happy people like myself who like to get the latest greatest toys. Also if you are new to harmony remotes and think you will need to clone a command (as in it wont be found in the extensive logitech databases) then I would avoid it. Otherwise its still a solid remote. The logitech remote databases are great. Its just they lacked 2 commands for my receiver that needed to be hand programmed via this learning method.
Good luck.
PS: If you are having problem I have faith Logitech will eventually correct this issue and I know logitech is great about hardware replacement so down the road at least it can be traded up for their latest revision.
Logitech Harmony One Universal Remote [Posted on 2008-05-09] I love this little guy. Works better than advertized. Too many remotes all over the place? No more my friends. A very welcome addition to any home whether a geek or non-geek alike is running the show! Other family members will love the ease-of-use and convenience. Has considerable ergonomics in its design. I highly recommend this nifty state-of-the-art remote.
