Comparing the Logitech mm-32 and the Sony SRS-M30 portable speakers [Posted on 2008-04-26] In preparation for a month's travel in Europe, I bought both the Sony SRS-M30 and the Logitech mm-32 portable speaker systems, intending to test them side-by-side and return one of them. The Sony is a bit less expensive, smaller, and lighter than the Logitch, but the sound quality is decidedly inferior to the Logitech. The Logitech also includes a slick padded carrying case with a separate compartment for the power supply.
But at only 8.4 oz. for the Sony compared to 15.6 for the Logitech, it was a pretty even trade-off between sound and weight. If operating in battery mode, the Sony uses 3 AAAs whle the Logitech needs 4 AAs, increasing the weight differential by 2.2 oz. As I travel with only one carry-on convertible suitcase/backpack, weight is an important consideration.
The AC power supply units decided the issue. The Logitech is rated at 100-240v (suitable for both U.S. and foreign use) while the Sony is rated at 120v, limiting it to North America. I returned the Sony.
Logitech Portable iPod system [Posted on 2008-06-19] Needed a portable system to be able to listen to my iPod at work,,,,this fit my needs perfectly. Sound is good, easy hook-up, and comes with a case for storage. --Interestingly, the directions came in Chinese--
Logitech mm32 [Posted on 2008-06-22] The Logitech sounds great but comes with no "English" instructions. It does not hold the IPOD 3MG (with the larger screen) very stable, but it does work. Also it does not charge the IPOD like other models do. However, it is convenient, esp. for a desk and sounds good.
Not what was expected [Posted on 2008-06-24] Ordered a Logitech but received a Logicool. Logicool is what is sold in Japan. The AC adpater is adaquate, but not UL approved. The "kit" of inserts will not satisfy the 3rd Gen NANO, but my exacto-knife was able to complete the modification (Kids - Do not use an exacto-knife without help from your parents).
The sound is good, very good. The speakers are well constructed and the carry bag is an appreciated touch. I have ths same complaints that others have related to the misleading pictures showing the iPOD docking in the cradle. Instead, you must - MUST, MUST, MUST use the headphone port to get sound from the iPod to the speakers.
I gave it two stars for the misleading advertisment and the fact that I received the Japanese model when I live in the US.
For Size and Portability [Posted on 2008-06-30]
What you need to know
--This is not a docking station
--It is simply 2 speakers held together by a plastic holder
--The IPOD does not lock in to any prongs, simply rests loosely in the plastic cradle
--You can use 4 AA batteries with no AC, however your IPOD does not charge
--Comes with an AC adapter, so you can choose this method, although there are better choices if you plan on using AC power
--If you wish to simul-charge your IPOD, you must supply your own IPOD charger cable and slip it under this device (it locks in to a small plastic inset)
--You can charge your IPOD while you are playing music
--Device is weighty and feels pretty solid
--Important, there is a hidden headset jack that must be used to play your IPOD-this is NOT SHOWN on any of the pictures, this seems to be deceptive
--Sound is respectable for the size, portability and price
CONS
--The black headset jack. This device would be pretty darn good if it had a bottom loading mechanism to play music
--Very little bass and the deeper sounds are just about lost, but again pretty good for the price
--Remember to charge your IPOD otherwise you'll have to break out your cable
POSITIVES
--It's profile, I can hide it on my bathroom vanity and when I'm not using it virtually disappears
--I can pick it up and move it to another room--the battery power is nice and AA batteries make it easy to supply
--I think it is the best device in it's price range, simply b.c it is so small AND has the battery only option which was critical to me
Summary:
So if size and using battery power are the most important aspects for you, this is a good choice. I needed something I could use for about 30 minutes a day while I was getting ready for work. This little gadget lays across the back of my vanity and you can hardly tell it's there. It's a bit of a pain to plug in the headset jack, and certainly it is not attractive, but again it's profile was so appealing. I looked at some of the nicer sets, but many came with a transformer or sub woofer, and I wanted something I could stick a few batteries in and pick up and move around if I needed to.
