A "Monster" Upgrade [Posted on 2007-08-18] I have always looked toward Monster for affordable audio upgrades for my home stereo and video connections and, now, for my truck. I have to say I was surprised and disappointed when I read the other reviews for this item. As some of the other reviewers have said, I expect more from Monster and I never expected a Monster item to get this many thumbs down. However, I took the plunge, ordered a used cassette adapter and was pleasantly surprised.
My previous cassette adapter was a Sony. It performed well, I thought, when it came to connecting my new iPod Shuffle (2nd Gen.) to the factory stereo in my truck. Being an amateur audiophile I wanted a better cassette adapter and I knew that gold contacts were much better for sound quality. When I got the Monster adapter I gave the plug a cleaning and went to plug it in. I almost lost my hearing! The signal to noise ratio was so much better with this adapter that I had to turn my volume way down to get the same level of volume I had tried to eke out of the Sony. I used to have to turn the volume of my iPod up about five notches and turn my truck stereo way up to get a decent level of volume, resulting in a faint hiss in the background. No more! I had to tweak my bass and treble controls a bit (the bass was a lot deeper, a good thing, even though I listen to rock, not rap) and the fidelity is clear as a bell. Although my truck stereo is not the best, far from it, this is as good as it will get.
I am very pleased with the Monster iCarplay Cassette adapter. I do not understand why everyone else had problems with it, but I can only say that I recommend it if a cassette adapter is the way you have to go.
Horrible product and a waste of money [Posted on 2007-08-31] I needed to replace the old one that I had for over 6 years. I figured Monster would be good because of their reputation. I have a Monster HDMI cable and it works great. But this cassette adapter is horrible! The sound is ok...if I can get it to work. Constantly would jump from side A to B a few times then spit it out while my stereo read "tape error". If I could give 0 stars I would because this was a horrible product.
Original frayed in just months, replacement died after two uses! [Posted on 2007-11-09] It is amazing that a company can actually get away with selling a product that simply does not work as advertised, or is so prone to defects that a large proportion of consumers experience product failure. After the flimsy cords frayed near the jack after a few months of light use, I sent it in for a warranty replacement. The replacement arrived and died after only two uses. I think that it would be good business for Monster to offer cash refunds to all who purchased this product and experienced one or more failures. This would go a long way towards restoring their brand image . . . I have completely avoided Monster ever since when purchasing cables. I am now sending in the replacement for another replacement, because my heavily used, superior-sounding, 10-year old cheap no-name cassette adapter is finally giving up the ghost.
Andrew [Posted on 2007-11-16] When I first used this product from Monster I had the same disastrous results as 'Katphish'.. I was outputting MP3s from my Nokia 9500 mobile phone. I couldn't believe they would have made such a bad product... they hadn't of course. It took me a while to realize I was running the volume too high from the phone and overloading the Cassette Adapter. Once I had tweaked the output to the adapter it worked really well. I also cleaned the heads of the cassette player... very important as dirty heads really mess with the sound quality. I could not be more pleased with the Monster adapter and use it constantly.
Good if you know how to use it. [Posted on 2008-04-07] A lot of the reviews I've seen on this site complain of this adapter's poor sound quality- that couldn't be farther from the truth. This adapter plays back sound excellent through an iPod. The users here experiencing trouble do not know what they are doing unfortunately and don't know how to configure this device properly, or they have terrible sound systems.
If you read the instructions on the packaging it indicates that sound playback is best with your iPod volume adjusted to about 75%. Doing this produces excellent sound quality through the tape adapter. I'm using this in my Infiniti G35 with a Bose sound system.
I've had the adapter now about 9-10 months and my only complaint with it right now is that recently it has been having issues playing back in my car. Specifically, sometimes when I start my car up and the tape deck attempts to play the cassette, it has trouble doing so and will auto-reverse to side 1, then back to side 2, and eventually eject itself with a tape deck error message. This seems to happen the most right after starting the vehicle or sometimes when I hit bumps while driving. I've tried to look into the cause of this and from what I've read the issue seems to arise from rubber rollers that cover the plastic rollers within the mechanism and their tendency to get stuck and cause problems in the playback. It was also suggested to remove those rubber rollers to improve playback but I haven't tried this yet. However, the playback errors are happening quite frequently now so I will probably either try that or buy a different tape adapter soon.
