Customer Reviews:

I don't know how it works, but it does. [Posted on 2008-05-02]
This is my second remote extender. The first one (purchased several years ago) is still working fine, but I needed another one to control a device in a different room.

On my first unit, occasionally I had problems with the spare battery. You store it in the charger so it's supposed to always be charged, but for some reason it wasn't charged when I needed it. If I took out the battery and put it back in, it would start charging again. I haven't had any problems yet with the new unit.

Pros:
- It works as promised. It's worked with every remote that I've tried.
- The range is good. I can easily control the cable box located in the basement when I'm in the second level of my house.
- The battery life is reasonable for the remotes I'm using. If I had a remote that drew a lot of power (e.g. if it had a lighted lcd display), then the battery life might be a problem.
- The price is very good.

Cons:
- Batteries may not hold their charge.
- If you have a line of sight with whatever you are controlling, the remote usually won't work - I think because it's getting a double signal. Just point it away from the TV or cover up the IR transmitter on the remote and then it will work.

The extender works great. It's just what I wanted. It's an import of course and the instructions are very badly translated to English from Korean. You would think they'd have an English speaking person proof read it. Anyway, once I figured it out, I'm happy with it.

The most useful product I have purchased in a long time! [Posted on 2008-05-04]
I bought this to use with components that I keep in a cabinet. My alternatives were few and expensive, I ran accross this unit by chance and gave it a try. I have the "spaceship" located in tight cabinet, I thought I would have to use an emitter but the IR on the "spaceship" seems to be working fine with the IR's on my dvd and reviever.

Like most of the reviewers I am really astounded. Why has this technology not been integrated into other products?? You would think nearly every product that uses a remote would offer this technology at the least as an option.

Great Product [Posted on 2008-05-09]
I had the Radio Shack pyramid style. They were horrible. When I got the Next Generation it worked right away. I'm using it with a harmony 659 remote and a Tivo HD. The HD Tivo is in the basement and the TV is on the first floor. Only one thing. Since this is a current sensing RF transmitter it doesn't like it when you turn on the lighted buttons on the harmony remote. If I'm using it in the dark, I just turn on the remote light find the button and turn it off before I press the button. I only use this about 10% in the dark, so it's not a big deal.

Why didn't I find this sooner? [Posted on 2008-05-09]
After purchasing an LCD TV and hanging it on the wall in the bedroom, I found myself with nowhere to put the clunky X10 Powermid receiver that had been stationed next to my old TV on a stand. The Powermid had served its purpose for about 5 years -- but it was very temperamental -- you'd have to aim the old remote exactly at the receiver, and most of the time, you'd have to extend your arm to bring the remote closer to it for it to work. After searching online for a similar product that would have a receiver I could mount on the wall, I instead found the Next Generation Remote Control Extender, which not only was about half the price of what I originally paid for my Powermid, it also gave me the benefit of not having a receiver at all to have to point the remote to.

I was optimistic to receive it due to the number of positive reviews left by others here on Amazon, and the reviews ended up being entirely accurate. This is by far, the best IR remote extender I have come across. In addition to the extender, I also ordered the additional transmitter for the unit -- NGHP TX433 Extra RF Transmitter For 433.92 MHz -- which allows you to use a 2nd remote somewhere else in the house to control the same device. In my case, I am using one transmitter in a One-For-All PVR-6131 and another in a Tivo peanut remote. Both remotes perform flawlessly from anywhere in the house, without the need to aim them anywhere.

The documentation that comes with the product suffers from poor translation into English -- but for the most part it serves its purpose. One thing I should point out -- there is a battery charger on the bottom of the base unit with receptacles for 2 devices. The shorter slot is for using the included 2/3 battery by itself. The second slot, which can be misleading because it is labeled 'AAA' is meant for charging another battery while it is inserted into the transmitter. The manual wasn't clear on this, but the FAQ at the manufacturers website explains it perfectly. Do NOT put a regular AAA battery in there!

Overall, this is a great product and I am extremely pleased with it. The price is very reasonable, and much less than similar products that do not perform as well. I'm only disappointed that I didn't find this sooner!
