This device is fantastic for what it does. I'd probably give it 3 stars if I were rating it on sound quality alone, but if I were looking for perfect sonic quality, I'd be looking at Bose, Shure and Audio-Technica over-ear products, not cartilage transfer products. This device clips onto the outside of your ear and allows you to hear music or multimedia without obstructing your ear canal. There are a ton of situations where this is incredibly useful. I frequently work in small areas with a team of people, and it seems rude to stuff earbuds into my ears to listen to music or watch a video while they're in the room and may need to ask me something at some point. Then I have to pull the buds out of my ears to listen to them, and it could look to them as if they feel they're inconveniencing me. Not so with these guys. I can hear my coworkers and outside sounds as clearly as if I had nothing in my ears. This could also be useful on motorcycles, bicycles, in subways or trains, while walking outdoors - basically anywhere that blocking outside sounds would be rude or cause a safety hazard.
Now for sound quality, these cans are solid with bass and highs, but definitely lacking in the mids. This works great for movies and video, classical music, rap, and spoken word, but not as well for rock and pop music. If you slide the cans and clip up and down the edge of your ear, you'll find sweet spots that will sound better than others. Although it seems the nature of the product will likely prevent an improvement on those mids, the quality is certainly better than listenable. The highs are absolutely crystal clear and the lows vibrate your ears to feel like a solid driver.
One downside to this product is that it is an active system; that is, it requires a power source - an inline rechargeable battery pack in this case - to operate. The battery pack is small, and is recharged via the included USB and/or AC adapter, but it is something additional that a few may find cumbersome. I feel that because the pack is so small and lightweight, it doesn't affect my usage at all.
All in all, a great product for specific uses, and well worth the $110 for those needs. I wouldn't recommend it for the gym or a plane ride or a "private getaway", but isn't that kind of the opposite of what these things were intended for? Five stars from me for my specific application.
