Great smartphone with a couple of annoyances. [Posted on 2008-05-09] I received the phone the next day before 3:00pm, didn't know that my order got upgraded from standard to express, which was welcomed suprise.
The good points:
*It works as a phone perfectly. Has great and very clear recepcion, not cristal clear, but very close.
*If you used a Palm OS gadget before you will be able to master the device in just a few hours or couple of days if you haven't.
*It Hot Syncs perfectly with Outlook (FINALLY!!!!), which is a great to avoid Palm Desktop (read the bad points for more on this).
*It is big, but you get rid of two gadgets. Which what I was going for, as I carried my mobile phone along with a Palm. And the full QWERTY keyboard makes up for bigger size. I mean, I can type like I would on a computer with BOTH thumbs or just one, if you have long fingers like me. But if you have big hands, short hands or really thick fingers you will have problems with this unless you use both thumbs. But it beats the stupid: press a key three to four times to get the letter or number you want on a message.
*The screen is really bright and pixel perfect. Now you can really read you is calling you and have big numbers when you dial a phone.
The bad points:
*This one is really, really, really bad... battery life. It drains the battery in a single day or if you use it constantly in a few hours. It is just ridiculous, I have to carry the car charger, leave the USB cable (it charges the phone) at hand and also the wall charger close because YOU WILL NEED ALL OF THOSE. It is just stupid to use such a low capacity battery, if you can order the 3rd party extra big battery, it is money well spent. I'm about to order two of those.
*Old Palm programs crash. If you hace lots of old Palm programs it is very likely that it will reset your phone, it is quite annoying. I have some old software that hasn't received updates and use some qwirks that aren't present in the current Palms. So I'm forced to find other alternatives and buy them.
*No WIFI! You can pay your mobile provider for Internet access, but hot spots are everywhere, Wifi is faster and cheaper too. Why do I have to pay obscene amounts of money for slow Internet access?
*Palm Desktop... ugh... why can't Palm just update that software? It is the worst software to date. The UI is terrible, looks outdated, doesn't have any new features, since when? 1995? You should use Outlook instead as Hot Sync works with it perfectly and avoid Palm Desktop at all costs, it is just not worth it.
If you are in the market for a smartphone and can live with the short battery life, no bad programed old software and no Wi-Fi then you'll be more than happy.
I am happy, even without Wi-Fi, I don't need 24/7 Internet access, but yet it is a feature that is very handy on airports or coffee shops with free wi-fi for a quick review of your e-mail.
Loooove it!!!!!!!!!!!! [Posted on 2008-06-26] I only have 4 days with my Palm and so far I love it! It has everything I was looking for. LOVE MY PALM TREO 680 :)
Palm Treo 680 [Posted on 2008-07-13] My old cell phone battery was going out and my old Palm T5 battery was not holding a charge very well either so the Palm Treo 680 was a good choice for me. It has the capabilities that I needed from Palm and also was a match for my AT&T service.
Although it is an unlocked phone I did not need it to be as I already was using AT&T as my service provider, but it would be a good choice for anyone who is looking for a Palm/phone combination
I was able to upload all my old Palm programs and convert all my old phone information without any problems. The SIMS card was easy to replace and so far I have not found any problems.
I have probably used both the Palm and the phone more since I have had the Treo than I had used either one before I purchased it.
I already had a 16G iTouch so I did not need the iPhone although that would have been my next choice but I would still have needed a replacement for my Palm.
I like it and so far have not seem any problem. I also purchased a Sandisk 4GB Secure Digital SD HC Memory Card at the same time and use it for extra storage when needed but so far it has not been necessary.
Treo 680 review [Posted on 2008-07-24] Good product as I upgraded from the Treo 650. It is lighter, smaller and the screen is sharper. The only negative is that the battery life is much less than the 650.
Terrific! [Posted on 2008-08-15] Just what my wife wanted. Excellent service and very quick turnaround/shipping from the merchant.
