No AC adapter plug! Only runs on batteries! [Posted on 2008-01-02] Everything I have read about this product on the Amazon and the Philips websites state that the AC adapter is not included but is an option. the Philips website for this exact model number even shows a connector to plug in the AC adapter. HOWEVER, the product I received with exactly the same model number DOES NOT have an AC adapter connector and clearly states that it runs only on batteries! So if you really want to plug your speakers in while travelling (car, hotel etc), don't buy these ones...I returned mine.
These sound WAY better than I thought they would [Posted on 2008-02-08] These little speakers are just plain wonderful. I bought them for podcasts, but they sound good enough for music. The highs are as good or better than you'll get from most "real" speakers. The mids are fine but a little hollow sounding, and they lack bass, but the bass boost button helps a lot. They blow away any laptop speaker I've ever heard.
If sometimes you just don't feel like listening to headphones, or maybe you want to share your music/podcast with others, these are perfect. They do require 6 AAA batteries, but I use rechargeables so that's not a problem. I do wish they had a power indicator light.
Very good sound [Posted on 2008-04-17] I just bought my first Ipod and I bought these for my desk at work and the sound is REALLY good. They do run on batteries so I guess that is a drawback for some, but I paid 30 dollars at Target and figured the sound is really good for the price I paid.
Best sound quality in class [Posted on 2008-07-30] I was looking for compact portable speakers for my mp3 player and laptop to take along when traveling, and narrowed down my choice between the Philips SBA220/37 and the Logic3 iStation Traveler. Both were the same price (in the major retail stores - online prices vary), seemed to have almost the same specs, so I decided to get both and compare them side-by-side. Bottom line: The Philips sound quality was far superior, especially the lower-end (bass) when the bass-bosst is on. To me, the sound quality was the most important deciding factor, but there are some other differences other people might care about:
Philips SBA220/37
Pros: well-rounded sound quality (w/ bass boost enabled), ability to separate speakers about 18" for stereo, volume control, nice nylon carry case.
Cons: no power-on indicator light (easy to forget to turn off thus draining your batteries), no way to connect to AC power, no grills to protect speaker cones.
Logic3 iStation Traveler
Pros: compact size, metal speaker grills, only 4 AAA batteries (the Philips uses 6 AAAs), bright power indicator light, external AC adapter jack (but adapter costs 15 bucks), includes a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter for cell phones, includes 4 AAA batteries.
Cons: sound quality lacks any kind of bass, no volume control (must use device volume control only), speakers only 3" apart so no real stereo separation, larger devices (like hard-drive players) won't fit in center cradle, "carry case" is ultra-cheap non-woven fabric bag.
Wow amazing portable sound [Posted on 2008-09-21] I've tried out quite a few portable speakers for my Sansa e270 player in the last week or so to see what sounded the best & these Philips do a far better job than any of the others. Amazing sound for a portable speaker. The bass boost really makes them knock the socks off of many other "tinny" sounding brands including Sony. The 4 watts for the system makes for a solid playback.
It does take 6 AAA batteries (I'm using rechargables) but still only weighs about 12 oz with them in the speakers. It does say that you can use an ac adpater but I haven't found anywhere to plug one in & have emailed Philips about it with no response yet.
They really aren't small enough to fit in a shirt pocket but certainly small enough to travel with or throw in a purse / backpack.
The only other set that I've found that comes close - still not quite as good on sound but a bit lighter / a touch more compact - is the Logic3 i-Station Traveller - model IP102 -(yes that's how they spell traveler). These don't carry as much volume or bass as the Philips do but you can use an ac adapter for them & they only take 4 AAA batteries.
BIG CON: BAD Philips for falsly stating / advertising that these speakers can be used with an ac adapter! If not for this situation, I would have given these a resounding 5 stars for the price point.
