Customer Reviews:

excellent product , especially for the price [Posted on 2008-06-13]
I bought these at Costco without benefit of reading the various reviews here before hand. I was pleasantly surprised with the audio quality - no they don't rival $300 audiophile equipment - duh! But they do offer completely acceptable sound. On some recordings I found it necessary to cut the bass boost to prevent distortion, or modify other tone controls for best sound. My only criticsm was a slight rattle when walking - which turned out to be the battery - a small piece of foam fixed that. As for noise cancellation - again very adequate - I spend 2 hours a day in a commuter van - and these completely remove the tire roar, wind noise, and most other racket. I tried switching the noise cancelation on and off and the difference is night and day ! A wonderful pleasure to have something actually work well, as designed, and as advertised, at a reasonable price. Kudo's to Philips !!

Very nice for the money [Posted on 2008-06-17]
Replaced an older, less expensive set of Philips N/C headphones with these. These are comparable at cancelling noise but are better constructed. Major improvements are 1) much increased comfort due to better padding and 2) the ability to remove the dangling cable when you're not listening to music. I use these while reading on airplanes, so can't comment on the music sound quality.

phillips noise canceling makes music sound worse [Posted on 2008-06-18]
these headphones are very comfortable and when not listening to my ipod, they cancel noise reasonably well (~70%). BUT when listening to music, turn off the noise canceling feature - your music ears will appreciate it.

Not so good deal after all - pretty disapointing [Posted on 2008-06-19]
I was looking for a less expensive alternative to the BOSE noise canceling headsets and purchased recently the SHN9500 for a good price (20% instant rebate). I work with computers and the monotone noise of servers in the server room as well as the accumulation of computers on my desktop result in an increase of stress level over time. First I tested the Phillips at home, but I was not very satisfied. I was standing close to my ceiling fan but still could hear it pretty loud. I thought I'll give it a try at work and used it in the server room and my office. In the server room, it just lowered the noise level, but after I tested ear plugs I figured they cancel even more (and much cheaper). I tested them in my office where I have 2 desktops on my desk and one laptop. The noise of the fans and hard drives is already fairly quiet without the headset so I gave it a try and tested the headset. Again I was not very satisfied.
The craftsmanship of the headset otherwise is great, it fits well on the head, is not to heavy and the looks are also nice. I did not test the sound quality though because for me the noise canceling is the main issue but I have to say the included cable is not very long. I tested once the BOSE Q3 of a friend of mine and it was dead silent (in my living room with running ceiling fans). I guess I'll return my SHN9500 and go directly for the real deal.

Moderate Battery Life, Moderate Noise Cancellation [Posted on 2008-06-22]
I recently bought these headphones and made a round trip between Atlanta and Las Vegas on a noisy aircraft. As other reviewers have said, the noise cancellation is not perfect. It made a big difference on bass frequencies in the music, which is good because I was listening to new recordings of a jazz trio where I play the string bass. Without the noise cancellation, the bass was hard to pick out. With noise cancellation on, the bass was clear. But, I could still hear some airplane hum and it had little or no effect on the guy snoring behind me. I also didn't need to push the "mute" button to hear conversation.

The life from the battery that came with the headphones was poor. I used the headphones for about seven hours before the battery began to fade. The headphones begin to sound scratchy when the battery goes, and the scratchiness was distracting for the music I was listening to.

When I got home I measured the amount of current the headphones draw from the battery. They draw about 45mA on average. That means that a standard AAA alkaline battery, which is 1000mAh, should last 22 hours. So I am guessing that the battery they included was either old or had a smaller capacity. Alternatively, in loud environments the headphones might draw more current. I am flying to Japan tomorrow and will see if a Duracell 1175mAh battery lasts significantly longer.

Otherwise, they are very comfortable and nicely designed. The round carrying case is small enough to slip into my briefcase next to my computer.

UPDATE: I just returned from Japan, and the Duracell AAA has far outlasted the one that came with the headphones. I used the headphones for 12 hours outbound and 10 hours inbound (for a total of 22 hours, coincidentally) and the Duracell battery is still doing fine.
