Sound switches does as advertised! [Posted on 2008-06-14] I used to constantly have to unplug my speakers, then plug in my headphone, then unplug them and replug in my speakers --- what a hassle!!! I didn't have to go underneathe my desk or the CPU as I had added an audio extension cord, but plugging/unplugging was inconvenient and probably wore on the ends.
Thanks to the Plantronics PC Speaker/Headset Switch, I'm saved from messing with cords and plugging/unplugging several times a day! Now it's just so simple and easy as pressing a button to have speaker on or switch to headphone on. Finally a product that works as advertised, and one of those products that you'd never think would be useful but it truly is if you're in an environment in which you sometimes need peace and quiet, and sometimes you want to be loud and have the speakers on. I have 2 speakers and a subwoofer and very nice headphones, have not noticed any difference in sound quality.
About the packaging, it says it "instantly shift between speakers and headset...Toggles between speakers and headset with the effortless touch of a button. Compatible with PC sound cards for plug-and-play ease." The actual Plantronics switcher is 3" x 4" and is lightweight with 4 small round rubber grips on the bottom. Item is not heavy enough to stay in place if your speaker/headphone cords are hanging off the table, so adding a velcro/sticky at the bottom is advised.
Item has one cord coming out of it that splits into a green end [speakers] and a pink end [headphone] for plugging into your computer soundcard. Item does not require power to work, so it took about 2 minutes total to install, open the package, unplug your items and plug it into the Plantronics switch device and plug its cord into the correct computer holes.
Item can be found in several different places, such as here or eBay or Radioshack or MicroCenter...available under $15, very affordable and worth it! Comes with 1 year warranty by Plantronics.
Highly recommended for anyone who is tired of switching between speakers and headphone by plugging/unplugging, get this and just press a button, PRESTO!
Works as advertised [Posted on 2008-06-26] I bought this to solve the problem of having to unplug my desktop speakers and plug in my gaming headset (speaker + mic leads) into the back of my computer every time I wanted to use the headphones (particularly for late night gaming when everyone else in the house is asleep). This device is perfectly suited for this application. With a flip of the switch I can use headphones (using the headset mic as well) or desktop speakers. The unit is a little flimsy and tends to slide around the desk but other than that it's working great!
Does exactly what it should, what more can you ask? [Posted on 2008-08-17] If you're a gamer like me and want a nice headset for gaming/ventrillo/skype yet keep your speakers for when you're not doing those activities and don't want to pull your PC out and fiddle with wires then by all means go ahead and get this.
Set up is easy and it's as easy to use as it looks. Just flip the switch to speakers when you want to use speakers, and headset when you want to use headset. The sound quality is not effected at all, I couldn't tell a difference between having my equipment connected to this switch or directly to the PC. You might want to adjust your sound settings to Headset or however many speakers you have when you switch, however you'd be doing that anyways even if you didn't have this.
Again, great product, no sound degrading at all, and I recommend to anyone who doesn't have a USB headset and wants to use there speakers when not using voice chat.
Alternate way that is better [Posted on 2008-09-15] This seemed like what I was looking for, to go from PC speakers (sound only), to headset and microphone on Skype, without having to un-plug the speakers, and plug-in the headset each time.
I was disappointed to read here that the Plantronics switch is cheap, and not stereo.
Alternate way that is better (because it's stereo, and you don't have to flip a switch): Get a couple of these, at $6.99 each (see 2 pics), then you will have two stereo outputs, and two stereo mic inputs (I only use one stereo mic input though, for the headset) ...
RadioShack Goldseries, 42-2570
4", Stereo, Headphone Cable Y-Adapter
For connecting two sets of headphones to one audio source
Accepts two 1/8" stereo phone plugs
Great Switch [Posted on 2008-10-03] This switch works exactly as advertised. If you're looking for HiFi sounds, you probably shouldn't be adding any extra devices in your cable path. The sound DOES come through in stereo.
