Stay Away [Posted on 2003-07-22] This product has a manufacturing fault that has caused a large number of consumer problems. When playing DVD's the unit will freeze and the picture will break into multiple pixels. Research this online as I have and do not buy this product. I own one and have been trying to get satisfaction from Samsung.
Worked well for a year [Posted on 2003-07-26] I bought this unit to replace a VCR in our bedroom. Worked well for just over one year, before the tape loading mechanism failed. The local electronics shop could not fix it, and recommended sending it to the manufacturer for service. Of course, it was out of warranty by six weeks! Never did get it fixed. The good news is that our credit card company had an extended warranty program, that doubled the manufacturers original warranty. They just sent us a check for the full purchase price! Time to shop for something new. Remote is a bit complicated to use, not very intuitive. Picture and sound quality were okay. Given my experience with this product, I'd be hesitant to buy from them again.
Update of my previous two reviews - after 2 years of use [Posted on 2003-11-11] This is an update of my previous review and prior update. I have had this unit now for almost two years. Overall I am still happy with it. However , with time, a few wrinkles have developed. There are a couple of annoying quirks that we have had to get used to. Occasionally we have a 'scene-Skip' problem playing some DVD's. These are usually the bargain basement type but we have also had the problem with Good quality media, major-release DVD's. And we also see intermittent "artifacts" pop up "momentarily" from time to time. I dont know if this is a genreal characteristic in this particular product or if its just a bug in my own machine. Although a bit annoying, in general they do not cause us all that much trouble. If I had to replace this unit, I would probably look for something cheaper. there really weren't many units like this one on the market two years ago, but now they are easy to find and the selection is fairly good. I would have to say that the $300.00 we paid for it in 2001 is just too much to pay in 2003 - in fact the price has been lowered almost $100.00 since that time, but even $200.00 is a bit much with all the competition in the $150-$200.00 range. Overall a good unit but a little overpriced for the times. Reliability may be a factor here, If the thing is still functioning well ,in two or three years, I would definitely have to say it was worth the extra $$ if that translated into the extended use.
Not long lasting. [Posted on 2004-04-12] We purchased our combo about 1 year ago. The price was outstanding being that you get both the dvd and vcr. Well, it now won't play the dvd's. The company has offered to fix it for a "nice" fee, which turned out to be more than we paid. So needless to so we will now have a combo piece and a seperate DVD player. Not so convienant anymore.
Disappointing - Many DVD's skip or freeze [Posted on 2005-06-16] We bought ours a couple of years ago when it was the only affordable DVD-VHS combo at our local electronics store. Almost immediately we noticed that some DVDs would have trouble playing. Having nothing else to play them on, we assumed that it was the disks. We even took some DVD's back to the store and exchanged them as damaged. Since then we've found that disks that wouldn't play on the Samsung will play other people's machines without any trouble. Running a head cleaner doesn't make any difference. We're looking for something new, now, and trying not to make the same mistake.
When it works, which is most of the time, it's great. But when it DOES act up, it really ruins the evening.
