pass this up [Posted on 2008-04-12] If you don't have much use for a speaker, then pass this up. The speaker itself is okay, though it obviously lacks bass. Support for playlists is deficient; you need to use the included software to create usable playlists. Anything like a .m3u or .pls won't work. The cable is proprietary, and the device is worthless without it. Dealing with Samsung to replace it is very difficult and exasperating (e.g. you need to know the Samsung part number for the cable or you won't get the time of day). You need the cable to charge it, too, so plan on carrying that around with you and possibly losing it.
I really wish that I knew before I bought this that it doesn't support ogg vorbis! The retailer's website said it did, but none of Samsung's line sold in the U.S. does. If this is important to you, buy one from the UK. Not much control over the sound, either. You can switch between several (mostly useless) preset "sounds", but it's pretty much just a gimmick. Pretty much useless for viewing pictures or video, and both need to go thru the proprietary software before going on the device.
If you don't need the speaker, there are many, many smaller options out there with much more customisable sound, and that don't need special software or cables. Any time I have had use of the speakers has been a situation where a simple pair of powered speakers on an ordinary mp3 player could have done the job better.
The speakers work much better if you place an acoustically-reflective surface behind them, such as glass or tile. Still no bass, though.
Knowing what I do after nearly a year owning this device, I would not recommend it to anyone.
BTW, Samsung tech support is worthless, maddening, and extremely slow. If you aren't tech savvy, avoid this device.
