Best case for the iPhone. [Posted on 2007-10-26] This is a great case for the iPhone - I have a few criticisms, but nevertheless I believe this product is far and away the best case for the iPhone. I did a lot of research on iPhone cases because I wanted one that would really secure the iPhone well, protect it if it fell, and which would give me good access to it. In the end I feel that, because the iPhone is built the way it is, maybe all these goals cannot ever be fully met. Anyway, on with the review...
The case itself is very well-made in hard Napa leather, with a soft inner padded lining made of polyester or nylon but with a velvet texture. The iPhone feels very well-protected indeed when it's in this case. The leather (which is apparently sheepskin) is pressed to look like crocodile skin. The case is dark brown - a little lighter in colour than the image shown on Amazon.com.
The belt clip is very nice - unlike belt clips on other iPhone cases this one is not bulky at all, but it's not removable so it's not totally perfect for slipping into one's pocket. The other drawback is that unlike plastic belt clips the belt clip has no mechanism for keeping it on the belt (no bottom lip or clip). However, it does remain attached very well because it is made from what I assume is a springy metal (covered with leather) that fits very tightly onto the belt - so tight that at first it's hard to get it onto the belt). I feel my iPhone is more secure with this belt clip than I do with others because it seems to be less prone to fracturing due to fatigue (which plastic clips have been known to do) and even if it does fail, as I said earlier the iPhone is nicely protected by the case.
The case comes with the requisite holes in the bottom for the iPhone's speaker, so you'll hear music or the iPhone's ringer even when it's in the case. Also, the belt clip rotates to any position, so you can wear it however you like. Because the case is so snug it would even be possible to wear it upside down.
The biggest flaw in the case is that the iPhone is a bit difficult to remove from the case - it's a very snug fit - and I find that in pulling it out I often accidentally click one of the volume buttons which cancels out any alarm that I might have set. So then I have to go searching to see what the alarm was for. However, this is a small price to pay and probably with a bit more use it would become a little looser.
Having said all that, I must admit that in the end I don't tend to use this case all that much. I find that it's easier to simply pop the iPhone in my pocket because the glass front of the iPhone is very tough - of course I remove any coins first. But for people who must have a case, I think this is the one to get.
This is a nice looking case [Posted on 2008-03-18] The first reviewer has given you a pretty good detail of the case itself.
This is a very nice looking brown leather case. This is not your show it off, fancy colors, look I have an iPhone, teenager case. It is attractive without drawing attention to itself whether wearing a suit or jeans.
For the person using their iPhone as an iPod and wanting to wear their headphones around with it - you'll note in the pictures above, there is no access to the volume controls while the phone is in the case. Which means that if you pull the phone out of the case in a single motion, you'll not have the problem of hitting the volume controls noted previously.
The clip is the typical non spring loaded money clip. So, you will be dealing with the same issues as this type of money clip. Once you've used it on a thick leather belt, the clip will become stretched out and will not hold as tight when you want to just slip the clip onto your pants pocket or a dress belt. And it does hold the phone tight to your body, unlike the first case I tried and gave to the wife before it even had a chance to leave the house.
Overall, it's a recommendation. This is a very nice case.
