It gets better than this?? [Posted on 2008-08-31] Now I learn these 'phones are not even top of the line, and I don't care! They are incredible. I bought them somewhat whimsically after knowing Sennheiser to be reputable, but these far exceed my expectations. I will own nothing else.
They are comfortable, and they've been the best quality headphones I've heard for any music thus far, blowing my other $100 pairs I've had out of the water. Reproduce lows surprisingly well.
The only downside is that they make some mp3's unacceptable to listen to since it shows their flaws. Good for music in general I guess! Right now I'm listening to Galactic Live at Jazzfest and it's insane, my ears are absolutely flooded with sound and I can't even crank them up to the max.
No good for music with dynamic range [Posted on 2008-09-12] If your music is flat and has about the same volume from beginning to end, you MAY be able to live with these headphones.
I built a dynamic range expander and use DBX range expansion as well. The softest sound is 7 dB softer and the loudest sound is 8 dB louder using these expanders.
These Sennheisser HD-555 Audiophile headphones couldn't take it. They distorted badly and then clipped - the driver was locked at maximum travel.
Seriously, $40 Koss headphones out-perform these things. The Koss cans sound brighter and have no problem with the dynamic range.
Audiophile is not a proper description - try pile.
Best headphone period for less than $100. [Posted on 2008-09-25] I got these headphones from amazon over 1 year ago. Best headphone for the price. Do leave them connected to your amp with music playing for about 40-50 hours. But once these headphones are broken in you cannot campare these to any for comfort and sound.
I have several headphones, I also have the Sennheiser 650 (approx $400) and the Sony MDR7506 ($100 from amazon)
I got the Sony for my wife as she does not like the music to leak. She hates them, there is no bass, even when connected to a high power source.
Sony are comfortable but just lack the listening enjoyment which a normal person expects with there everyday Jazz, rock and pop music.
I like the Sen 650 (use it with a headphone amp) but when I listen side by side and switch between the 650 and 555, 650 sounds better just a little bit.
I mean if 555 are 8.5 , 650 might be 9 or 9.3.
So spending 300 dollars extra will not give you 4 times better sound.
With the 650 you also need a amp to drive it.
So to recap, BUY THE HD-555!!
Why:-
Comfortable
Affordable
Good build quality (Still good after over a year)
Great Mid and highs
Great Bass response without overpowering it.
Don't need a headphone amp (Can use it with your Mini MP3 player)
Only one drawback, they are open design, so other people will be able to hear them too (But this can be advantageous as you are able to hear what is going around as well; telphone ring, baby is crying etc)
Comfort, Sweet Sound, and ability to hear noises around you! [Posted on 2008-09-27] The comfort of these headphones is unrivaled in phones costing twice as much. They sound phenomonal as well. The bonus of not having wires dangling from around the phones is well worth the extra cost. Buy these headphones!
My Take on the Sennheiser HD-555 [Posted on 2008-09-29] Sennheiser 555 is the best sub-$100 full sized open headphone. I've had the HD-555 for about 6 months now, and here are my thoughts
Pros:
= comfortable fit
---- circumaural, they cover your ears with plushy Velour material
---- glasses friendly
---- hours of comfort without much agitation
= Superior Sound Stage, spacious
---- sound stage will blow your mind. Separation of frequencies in instruments are precise and crisp
---- high dynamic frequency spectrum
---- ridiculous spacious; when listening, it feels as if you have two large speakers suspended next to your ears.
= Portable units friendly
- works well with ipods and mp3 player, but portable amp is recommended.
= very musical
---- handles bass and low frequencies very well.
++++++++ deep rich bass with a tight punch
++++++++ bass is not over powering, doesn't muffle the treble
---- treble and mids really come out
++++++++ handles acoustic instruments and vocals like magic
---- cleans highs, crystal clear
= user replaceable parts
---- always nice to have
Cons:
= no isolation or noise cancellation
---- these are open headphones, noise comes in, noise goes out
---- blast these cans in the library and you'll probably get some stares
---- blast these cans in the train or in traffic and your music will get muffled with the surroundings.
---- they are great when there is not sound around, but when there is, it is a deal breaker.
= not portable
---- long cord (10ft)
---- gets really sweaty in the summer
---- the 3.5mm/6.3mm adapter is really annoying with using it with portable mp3/cd players
= average build quality
---- nothing too fancy, just plastic here and there
HD-555 won't disappoint!
for references, I own:
HD-555, DT-880, HD-280, ER6i, SR-80
