Best By Far [Posted on 2007-10-26] The short and sweet of it is that I have owned Shure E2C's, Bose TriPort, Bose QC2's, and Shure E4C's. The newer SE420's give you deep, rich sound without overwhelming base or blocking out the highs. Search around for an authorized dealer to get the best rate and you can snag an authentic pair for about $250...much lower than the $400 retail on Shure's site. The combination of the two separate TrueAcoustic speakers for distinction and clarity are unparalleled. Needless to say, all of my other aforementioned ear and headphones are all now on eBay!

Great clarity [Posted on 2008-06-01] This pair of earbud is one of the best especially if you can find it for $215 on sale. Beat Q-jays hands down. Beat etymotic etymotic er-4p with regard to bass. High = 4.5 Mid = 5 Bass = 3.5.
The only thing better is se 530 which go for $350 on sale.
Good, but disappointing. [Posted on 2008-06-05] I just purchased a pair of Ultimate Ears Triple.fi 10 Pro Earphones, and the sound from those was so brilliant that I didn't want to destroy them at the gym 4-5 times a week. So I bought these SE420's for around $266 in hope that I can use them at the gym yet still have good sound.
These are a little disappointing. I'm a big fan of heavy, strong, thumping bass, and these are definitely lacking there. The treble, however, is very good and the clarity on the songs is great; I guess I was just hoping for a little more.
In terms of comfort, these are far more comfortable than the Ultimate Ears I have, and I was expecting this as my e4c's that these replaced were great too. They sit in your ear perfectly, they are light, and perfect for running / gym. I'm not sure what the reasoning was behind the cord / extension cord change, but not a big deal either way.
Good earphones - those that are stepping up from Apple's standard iPod earphones will be wow'd by the sound, those who have similar Shure's or have the Ultimate Ear triple.fi 10's I mentioned will be disappointed. I'll be holding on to them as they'll achieve their purpose of good earphones for the gym that I can knock around a bit.
