This thing must be from 1989 [Posted on 2008-04-12] Hello, In a sentence...Don't bother with these. The unit's dated. The charge comes from contacts in the base. The units need to be dialed in each time I use them. The sound is shallow. The range is lame at best.
Pretty Good [Posted on 2008-05-10] Thanks to a couple of reviews i was able to make an informed purchase.
Particularly the wireless router issued concerned me. The manual tells you how to deal with that: Press the tune button on the base once, and the tune button on the headphones once. It worked for me.
At first i was listening to a cd with my router unplugged. However, after plugging up the router (turning it on) the music started getting very choppy. I followed those instructions then the music was coming in smoothly again.
Then i got on my computer and started browsing the internet. I noticed my router signal wasn't at full strength, but as i type now, it is at full strength. I also downloaded a 60MB+ file without interruption, and the speed was fast. All this while still listening to the headphones.
My wireless router is a low-end Belkin Wireless G Router (Model #: F5D7230-4). It's about about 10-12 feet away from the the base for the headphones. For the most part, i sit about 4 feet away from the base. But when i get up an and walk i can go everywhere in my 1 bedroom apt and hear just fine.
A nice feature for me is that i can hook up my ps3 to the base using the digital optical link (wire is included with these headphones) and can hook up my mac mini using an analog y-cable. And on the base, all i need to do is switch which to the one i want to listen to.
If the you're listening to music and it sounds a little dull, switch the Effect slider to Music.
The headphones feel so light on my head.
No regrets. 4.0 Stars. The sounds on these isn't as great as Sony's MDR-CD580 headphones, but it is sufficiently good. I use the equalizers to make the sound better for me. The main problem is getting the base to sound the way i like.
Also seeing as how you have to tune the set inorder to preserve your internet signal from a wireless router, it'd've been great if the set saved those settings.
Not quite useless. [Posted on 2008-05-17] The major problems with this unit.
1) Battery usage. The batteries last about 2 hours. You can't even watch a whole movie. You had better have at least 3 sets of rechargeables available. I owned an MDR-IF5000 (which they don't make any more) and the batteries lasted many, many DAYS on that one.
2) The Battery cover. Since you are going to be changing the batteries a lot, it would be helpful to have a battery cover (like the MDR-IF5000) that is attached and is easy to use. This one is just a pain.
3)The RF itself. My MICROWAVE stops this unit from working at all. A MICROWAVE!!! What? Sheesh. I didn't have these problems with even the cheapest RF devices I have used before.
All in all, it's disappointing. Go back to making the IF5000, Sony.
Excellent, so far [Posted on 2008-05-17] I've read the reviews from others and I've had none of the problems that others seem to have. I have the optical transmitter cable plugged into the optical out on my Pioneer DVD player and I have had absolutely no problems with noise or choppiness. In fact, I have the coaxial digital cable from the DVD player going to my five year old Yamaha 5.1 DTS receiver, and the digital optical cable going to the Sony headphone transmitter. And, I have a wireless router also and have had no noise problems.
And, the sound is better than I expected. The sound is great for movies, DVD concerts, and I've even listened to a some regualar CD's with the Dolby Digital surround engaged.
I am in my mid 50's and have had many headphones over the last 30 years or so. I now have a pair of Sennheiser 545's ($140)that I love, but between the wireless capability and the 5.1 icing on the cake, these are the best headphones I've ever owned.
The setting for music/movie is excellent. I normally use the music for music and DVD concerts and the cinema for movies.
QUITE PLEASED [Posted on 2008-06-13] THE SONY DS-6000 SEEMS TO BE A FINE PERFORMER. A LARGE PLUS.......IT HAS
PREVENTED MY TRYING TO DEFEND MY SELF FROM THE "LYNCH MOBS" COMING TO MY
DOOR OF THE APARTMENT I LIVE IN,WHEN I HAVE THE SOUND UP HIGH ENOUGH TO
TRULY ENJOY A PARTICULAR TV SHOW OR DVD MOVIE.
