Excellent headphones-but watch out for warranty issues! [Posted on 2008-05-20] This is the second set of identical headphones I ordered. The first set was great-nice fit on ears, good sound quality, etc. But... one side quit working about 3 months after purchase. I called the distrubutor through whom I had purchased the unit. They said there was a 90 day parts & labor warranty on the phones. I was about a week past that date, so they would accept them for repair, but I would have to pay the labor cost. The labor was just about what I had paid for the phones through Amazon! So, I ordered another set of phones but I am not happy that the original set was not replaced. I hope that the second set holds up better than the first set!
Excellent headphones, lots of user errors [Posted on 2008-05-28] At first, I was very surprised by all the negative reviews of these excellent headphones. No bass? Not hardly. They thump, and hard. All treble? Huh? No volume, even at max setting? What? I can only turn my iPod up just under half way to have good loud volume.
THEN it dawned on me when I saw one person wrote you have to "slam them in your ear canal if you want to hear anything".
People, people: THAT'S HOW YOU WEAR THEM. They go into your ear. Not just sit on the outside.
As for the fragility or bad cord and exposed wires: I haven't had any of those problems, so maybe Sony changed the cable used for manufacture. I keep mine wadded up in a book-bag pocket.
Excellent product, great sound. You just have to use them correctly.
they work [Posted on 2008-06-09] These are some of the better earbuds out there. They don't hurt (as some earbuds do), and the wrap-around feature keeps them in your ears (for when you decide to overreach the length of the cord).
The nicest thing about is the length. I can now listen to the radio on my desk and still reach the drawers in my cubicle without having to take them off. Wonderful!
I would recommend these to anyone who has suffered the standard length of earbuds.
Good value - good sounds [Posted on 2008-06-17] After getting ripped off of my Shure earbuds (middle model) and my Sennheiser noise canceling - yes, had them in the same bag on a trip - I was in need of a quick pair of earbuds. Somehow I came upon a review of a Sony pair of earbuds and in reading the review, this model was mentioned as having better clarity than those beng reviewed.
I was game at around $[...] to try a pair.
Chose the black model.
Well, these sound as clear to my old ears as the Shure when I am sitting quietly. Good, clean, crsip sounds. These buds do not seal in the ear like the Shure (you know, those seal so tight that when you walk you hear your foosteps or hear yourself breathe or on an airplane you still get clear music) and thus the Sony's need to get cranked up when I am in my old pick-up truck as they do not seal out the noise like the Shure. Overall, I am probably safer for this, eh?
They are very comfortable and I was wondering if those 'ear hangers' would fit my ears properly. Not a problem as they actually just are there as a light duty support -- you do not feel them.
So, after a month -- yes, these are worth the price. I like the offset wires for left and right channels as it helps me to immediately know which bud goes to which ear. These have a light seal in the ear -- comfortable and you can stll hear some of the outside noises. That is OK as they do not claim to be noise canceling or seal. I use the medium cups and think I will try the small ones one day for a better seal.
I could not get these to stay on my ears no matter what I did [Posted on 2008-06-21] I've owned earbuds previously that wrap around your ears. I like that type of earbud. I was very disappointed in these Sony MDR-EX81LPs. The sound was good, but no matter what I did, the earbuds would not stay in my ear, nor would they wrap around my ear. They were very annoying.
I will admit that although I am an adult, I do have rather small ears. But there is no way to adjust the part that wraps around your ears (unlike other similar ones I've owned in the past). I did everything I could think of to get these to fit properly to no avail. If I wrapped it around my ear, the bud didn't fit inside properly. And if I put the bud in my ear properly, the "wrap around" part was just flopping beside my ear. I really wanted to make these work, but I just couldn't.
I sent them back to Amazon because they were more than $30 and I didn't want to waste my money.
If you have average to large ears, perhaps these earbuds will work properly for you. I was disappointed that there was no way to adjust them. The way they're designed is very unforgiving -- if your ears don't conform exactly to the way these are made, they will not work for you.
I also bought the V-Moda Bass Freq earbuds (which don't have a wrap-around feature) and I am much happier with those. They're realy comfortable and deliver incredible sound.
Additionally I bought some iLuv i301s. The sound they deliver is rather tinny but since they are inexpensive I will keep them as a "backup" pair.
So far, in my quest for decent iPod earphones, I highly recommend the V-Moda Bass Freq earbuds.
