Great sound, good price [Posted on 2008-05-22] I've gone through about 6 pairs earbuds in the past 4 years. But these MDR-EX75 Earbuds from Sony are by far the best that I've had, and what's surprising, is that they are one of the least expensive. The fact is, a lot of Sony's earbuds are superior to many of the competitors if you are looking for a wide frequencey response. Wide frequencey response generally means lower bass, and higher treble. This makes for a more dynamic listening experience. These MDR-EX75s are no exception to Sony's tradition of wide frequency response. In this case, the earbuds have a range of 6 Hz to 23 kHz. Most competitors' earbuds are typically 20hz - 20khz and rarely do they go below 10hz let alone 6hz (which is what these earbuds can go to). What I really like about these earbuds is that I can actually hear the bass coming out of my 80gb Ipod Classic. With other earbuds I've had, the bass was just barely noticeable. And compared to other earbuds, the overall sound quality is much better. I originally had the Bass Freq earbuds made by V-Moda. And while those earbuds definitely were bass-heavy, the sound quality was slightly harsh compared to the MDR-EX75. The MDR-EX75 is also similiar to Sony's cheaper model, the MDR-EX51LP (about $10-$20 cheaper). The difference being that the cheaper model doesn't sound quite as clear or crisp - but the difference between the two is barely noticeable. So if you want about 90% performance of these for half the price, then get the MDR-EX51LP and save yourself about $20. But if you are willing to spend a bit more, then the MDR-EX75 should be on your list.
Sony EX75 Earbuds [Posted on 2008-06-08] I bought these to replace my EX71s that died a couple days ago. Man, are these an improvement! Why?
1. The sound: These seem to have a much more "real" sound to them. The highs are brighter, without being tinny, and the low end is punchy and tight. To me, these sound as good as, if not better than, the higher-priced Shure, Sennheiser, and Bose buds.
2. The appearance: This set looks much better than the 71s. Not a huge factor in my book, but it may be in yours.
3. The cord: These cords don't tangle as badly as the older Sonys did. They also abandoned the one-side-longer-than-the-other design, for the more traditional V-shape.
4. The buds themselves: The silicone parts actually stay attached to the plastic housing on this model! (a known issue with previous models)
5. The price: The bang for the buck factor on this set is at the top end of the scale. These $40 headphones compete with models 5X to 10X their cost.
What you get:
- 1 pair of headphones w/ medium buds installed
- 1 2' extension cord
- 2 extra sets of silicone buds (sizes Small and Large)
- 1 plastic carrying case
What you won't get:
- Buyer's remorse!
