Portable quality sound at last [Posted on 2008-04-18] Folds into a size small enough for any pocket with my Cowon D2. Clarity is good, nice range and bass is deep for the size. Doesn't make you feel like you're missing anything like most portable headphones. Much better sounding than my MDR-g52g and they stay on well enough to go running with. Padding is much improved over most open-air Sony headphones. For the price I hope they are durable and the cord is thin but covered by some fabric weave.
Perfect for people who wish they could fit quality sound into their pockets without 6ft. cord and massive cans to draw attention. I have Sennheiser 202's that sound slighty better, but are a hassle to bring along.
Good Enough at Low Volume [Posted on 2008-06-21] I purchased this mainly because I wanted a comfortable neckband headphone -- in this regard it's okay. Sonically, it's slightly better than the stock earphones that come with ipods, zunes, etc... but it doesn't really compare to a similarly priced/sized Sennheiser PX100 or even the much cheaper Koss KSC75.
The bass is there, details are good enough to enjoy at midrange, and the soundstage is decent enough for me. Now for the bad: transparency is significantly worse compared to the PX100, timbre sucks, and worst yet... the sound starts to saturate at mid-volume. To put it in perspective, on a volume scale of 1 to 10, the Sony starts to lose sonic details at around 6 while the Sennheiser PX100 will retain its sonic quality up to 10!
I guess this headphone is good enough for casual use at low volume listening.
Other headphones I own: Sennheiser HD650, HD595, HD497, PX100, Koss KSC75, UE Super.fi5 Pro, Panasonic RP-HC500, etc...
Not as good as its predecessor (MDR-G74) [Posted on 2008-11-08] Compared to its predecessor (the MDR-G74), these headphones are a big disappointment. They have inferior low-range sound, tin can-like high-range sound, an uncomfortable fit, and short cord.
Positioning the headphones to be comfortable and give decent sound is almost impossible. The button for the retracting cord rattles as I walk and annoys the hell out of me. The cord is too short for me to hold my iPod in my right hand while walking, whereas I could with my MDR-G74's. The cord is extremely thin, but is wrapped in cloth and seemed strong.
Though they are more stylish than my MDR-G74's and have a retractable cord, the cons of these headphones far outweighs the pros, which is why I am returning them to Amazon.
[On a side note, the best headphones Sony ever made in this line was the MDR-G73. It appears they might be going downhill]
