UNIDEN BC-246T Compact Hand Held Scanner
I was so new to scanners I was afraid to get my first scanner. This scanner is beautiful. Easy to carry around. It has great reception, at least in Chicago. It comes preprogrammed with many police and fire frequencies so you can hear it right away..right out of the box..... The manual was a bit confusing, and programming right from the manual was difficult at first. Join a yahoo scanner group...and Get freescan(scanNow.org) or ARC software(butelsoftware.com). Freescan is shareware, but it will make your life soooooo much easier for a beginner...It is logical, even if you screw it up you can put it back quickly. ARC software by Butel was $39, also a good product. Now I am putting in fequencies and tweaking here and there and I LOVE SCANNING. This scanner is great! So many features I didn't even know I needed!

This is no joke. Its the real thing! [Posted on 2008-06-08]
This scanner is amazing. I must warn all of the people that aren't good with electronics, programming this thing will be almost impossible. It took me about 8 hours to get the hang of this scanner and I am and electronic freak. To me the instructions were BS and I did better free handing it. RadioReference.com is a really good site for finding trunked systems and their frequencies for your area. I love this scanner. The only cons with this scanner is that it only holds two AA batteries and the battery level goes down much quicker than their 4 AA scanners. Also the signal is great but compared to the bigger older handheld scanners, its not the same. I like the scanner, its size is great. After programming this scanner it is so easy to use. I like to be as lazy as possible and after properly programming this, finding stuff is a breeze. It comes preprogrammed and its in group 9. If your not in a major town thats on that list, I recommend turning that group off and starting another group from scratch.

Disappointed [Posted on 2008-06-16]
This scanner was a problem had to reprogram it numerous times. It would work fine for a couple of days then not at all.

good scanner for those with unlimited time (and money) [Posted on 2008-08-23]
This is my first scanner purchase, i have borrowed some old fashioned ones before.

First of all do not fall into the trap of expecting better reception just cause its a newer scanner and an expensive one at that.

This scanner will come with nearly all major cities preprogrammed(except minneapolis for some dumb reason) and guess what? They are all set to scan automically. In order to disable them you will have to select every single one and lock them out individually which takes along time. Why in the hell would you want to scan every city in the first place??? Whatever.

Anyways I do like the dynamic memory that it has, its very useful for organizing your freqs. I also like how small the scanner is, i thought it would be bigger.

Now for the real problem, using software for your scanner which im sure would help with the above mentioned problems. They give you a serial port connection...WHY??? I have been building computers for 10 years and have never EVER had to use a serial connection, so why they would use this outdated crap in 2008 is beyond belief. I only have 1 computer that even has a serial connection still and guess what it has Linux on it, so therefore I am screwed in that department.

The scanner works that is all I can say, If you are new to them do not buy a handheld one, just get the old fashioned base scanners.

As a side note i think uniden intentionally made the scanner difficult to program just so you would buy the software for an extra 40 dollars and also a usb cable if you didnt have a serial connection.

Take your time... [Posted on 2008-08-25]
For me, I wanted to be able to program some of my local frequencies and listen. It takes a bit more than this. If you have a chance, review the owners manual to different scanners before you buy. There are a number of .pdf files out there that will allow you to do this. I have never owned a scanner before and that knowledge may have led me to a a different model. Since I'm new to this arena, understanding the different concepts that go along with technology, can take some time. But in the long run is worth.
Having said that, programming this is not logical unless you understand the princeples and, should be easier for someone who is newer to this field.
It does come with multiple channels pre-programmed with popular channels from all over the U.S. This is annoying since most of them are useless. They take up more space then they are worth and since different systems share the same freqs, you'll have to edit the name anyway. WHy not just do it from scratch. Do the research to make sure this is the right scnner for you needs.
