Customer Reviews:

The stock iPhone headphones are better [Posted on 2008-04-23]
Don't underestimate the headphones that come with the iPhone, Apple put a lot of effort into making them sound nice. I got a pair of the Ultimate Ears while traveling only because I accidently left my Apple headphones at home. Compared to Apple's, the sound quality is not as rich. The UEs do a good job in the highs, decent at the mediums, but notably poor in the lows. This really got driven home after listening to the Apple and UE headphones side by side. The good news is these are comfortable, include several different size earbuds, and do a decent job at cutting back background noise (better than Apple's). They do, however, have a tendency to fall out. While I'd consider these "acceptable" - particularly while listening to music in a noisy environment - they are certainly not worth the price.

What are people talking about? [Posted on 2008-04-26]
I don't understand the negativity in these reviews.

Let me tell you where I'm coming from first: I own ultimate ears super.fi 5 pro headphones but when the iphone came out the fit was awkward so I've been on the hunt now for solid replacements for about 6 months now.

Getting tired of the Apple phones, I decided to take the plunge. I was hesitant to buy these initially because I already dropped $250 on the super.fi pro's so I decided to try the vModa headphones. WOW--WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY! Not only was the sound horrible but the button on the wire was hard to push. It's almost level with the material around it. So, I resolved to get these new super.fi 4vi headphones (ignoring all these terrible reviews).

So, I got them yesterday and the sound, to my delight, is just almost the level of the super.fi 5 pro's and the clicker is just fine to use (what are these other reviewers talking about???). I like that the button is a little lower (responding to another reviewer about it being hard to push with a jacket). We'll, I say, the button up by the ear is really silly because you have to raise your hand to your cheek every time you want to pause or FF. Also, like my super.fi 5 pros, if you take care of them and store them carefully, they should last (I'm sure there are isolated cases where this isn't so, like all other electronics.)

Honestly, I would've given these a 4 because I am spoiled by the beautiful super.fi 5 pro sound but I felt it was my duty to give it a 5 because of all the silly nitpicky things that people point out. I'm sure I'll get negative comments and I'll be more than happy to answer them one-by-one.

Bottom line: if you're in the market for good headphone for the iPhone at a fairly reasonable price point with excellent highs/lows and pretty good (not thumpin') bass, get these. If you like bass only and don't really care about overall clarity, get the muddy V-Moda's.

Good luck with your decisions.

Good sound but many design problems [Posted on 2008-05-05]
My headphones were delivered with a loose connection in the left headphone which was a first major disappointment with their quality control. Clearly these hadn't been checked in the factory.
I continued to test the headphones for a week or two anyway to work out if I wanted to have them replaced or return them.
After testing for two weeks I decided to return them for a refund.
The BAD.
- The answer/play/pause/skip button is impossible to press with gloves on , and almost impossible to press with a finger. I could only manage to press this button by poking it with my fingernail and I could never manage the double click necessary to skip a track.
- The split in the cable is far to low, it was down at my belly button. This would be OK except the answer/play/pause/skip button is at the split so it ends up being way down inside my clothes.
- There is no way to adjust where the cable splits, so due to the low split the cords end up catching on your shirt or jacket collar which causes loud cable noises to be transmitted in your ears.
- I found it quite difficult to talk with people using the headphones as since you can't hear yourself you can't judge the volume of your own voice.
- The last problem will only apply to people with small ears. The smallest size of sleeve was too large for my (small) ears, hence they were uncomfortable to wear.

The GOOD
- The sound quality was noticeably better than the quality of the included Apple buds.
- Isolation was good so I could enjoy my music without disturbing other people on the bus, and without them disturbing me.

overpriced, undervolumed [Posted on 2008-05-31]
Terrible product for the money. They are well made, but that's about it. I don't know what it is with these higher end earphones where the volume is severely hindered compared to a pair of $12 skullcandy ink'd earphones. You have the turn the volume to double the normal amount with these and that wastes your ipod battery power much faster. Ultimate Ears should be ashamed of themselves.

I almost bought another pair [Posted on 2008-06-15]
Yes it's true even though they died after only 6 weeks light daily use I was going to get another pair. I loved them, the sound, the way they fit in my ears, the look, the design everything. I thought I was just not careful enough but all the others say its the little wires inside get broken too easily. If I thought I could get them to last longer say at least 6 months I would get another pair. However, the other reviewers talked me out of that fantasy.
