Best Tent for the $$ [Posted on 2006-03-29] I'm surprised that this model isn't in more Sporting Goods Stores. I see smaller Wenzel tents there, at higher prices, but not this one. It is big and noisy in high wind but is very comfortable. We had 30+ mph winds on our camp-out and slept very comfortably. We had to stake down the upwind corners first, then the rest, before attaching the poles and raising it up.
The zippers are high quality and closed out the wind perfectly when we shut them. I felt no drafts! The entry door is off the ground and we set it up with a tarp under the tent, so we had room to wipe our feet before entering. When we took it down 3 days later, we had very little dirt to sweep out.
Only 1 negative: The stakes that come with it are just the cheap little bright metal ones. You can push them into the ground with your hands. We spent the $5 at Sports Authority for a package of good orange "t" shaped stakes that held the tent well in the wind. We had to pound the extra stakes in with our Hatchet/Hammer. When we pulled out the heavier stakes, one of the metal corner rings got bent out of shape. These rings are only designed to deal with the cheap stakes that come with the tent, so be careful.
We had no rain on this trip, but the rain-fly looks great and should do a fine job. The windows were tight in the high wind, so I'm sure they handle rain too. Other reviews here say it is a good tight tent in the rain.
The hanging shelf is great for drying towels and putting dirty clothes up out of the way. We even hung a light from it.
EASY to put up! [Posted on 2006-05-06] Regardless of what others say, 1 person CAN put this tent up by themselves! Done it several times. Probably not in a strong wind but it's pretty painless otherwise.
Great value! If it comes back in stock snap it up!!
Great for the price with a few drawbacks [Posted on 2006-07-20] For the price I paid for this tent, I am very happy. Even though Wenzel isn't as well known as Eureka, Kelty, North Face, etc., it seemed like it was well made.
As other reviews have mentioned, the height of the tent was a big plus, not having to stoop over to change or walk around the tent.
There was more than enough room in the tent for my family on a weekend camping trip.
The only drawbacks that I experienced were:
1. The screen and door are not integrated. That is, you have to unzip the screen and then the door in order to get into the tent. My other 3 tents have the screen inset into the door so you only have to unzip the door to get out if you have the screens open.
2. The door is offset from the center of the rainfly. This seems to leave it a little more exposed to rain than traditional tents where the door is centered beneath the rainfly "peak."
3. Even though I had a groundsheet beneath the tent, we had some water seep into the floor of the tent when we had a torrential downpour while camping. I guess I shouldn't complain too much since other tents ended up letting in a lot more water.
I did seal the seams on the tent floor and the rainfly so that may have been my saving grace.
Other than those few complaints, I am happy with the tent. It's very easy to set up, has lots of room and is relatively light for its size.
Good tent [Posted on 2007-01-05] This is a nice sized tent and it is very easy to assemble. The windows open very wide and the flaps roll out of the way. Held up to some rain with no issues.
camping in comfort [Posted on 2007-07-23] This is a super tent, has plenty of room for 2 cots, a weeks worth of supplies and 3 kids sleeping on the floor. It stood up well to a thunderstorm and heavy rain. Did not leak at all, and dried out fast the next day. Very good family sized tent
