WAY better than the factory skin [Posted on 2006-04-08]
Here's why:
- It fits better: More snug, the cut outs fit their components more tightly.
- All of the buttons are closed off: When I ordered I figured I'd cut out the buttons. The factory version has a cut out over the power button, but none of the others. I was always a little irritated by that because it was hard to find the right side button without looking. But the consistency on this model means none of the buttons are cut out and it's actually much better than having them that way.
- The buttons are raised: over each button is a slightly raised bit of the flex skin. Not only that, but the functions are embossed. You can use the player without looking much easier with this.
- Options: You can strap this thing to yourself in a number of ways.
- Strap or Belt: there are two slots to thread an arm strap, or possibly even a belt through.
- Lanyard: yup, you can hang it or wrap it around your wrist to carry or.. hell you can wear it around your neck if you can handle that.
- Belt Clip: This thing is awesome.
- It's removable, so you don't have to deal with it if you don't want to.
- You can easily pull the player off your belt to view the screen without fussing with it. This was one of the worst features on the factory model (it stayed on, but I could never get the damn thing off of me)
- It has a release button so you will never lose the clip, or your player should you be planning gymnastics or something.
- It swing freely. This means your headphone cord doesn't get tangled as much and it feels more natural to wear it.
My only complaint is that the cutout for the mic only reveals 2/3 of the holes. On the other hand, only one of the holes appears to open into the device. Take from that what you will. I haven't tested to see if there is any effect.
In summation: I'm incredibly impressed. I bought this because my boyfriend wanted his factory skin back (mine came with the 5GB size skin). When I ordered it I wasn't sure if I'd be giving him this new one and keeping the factory or not. There's no way I'd go back to the factory skin.
